Another red arrow and another discouraging performance sees my side drop outside the top 8000. Luckily, my minileague rivals have had up and down performances as well and I have maintained a 50+ point lead. My fiercest rival, ForzaInter has moved to 3rd and is within 60 points now, the headlights in the rearview mirror, ominously growing . . . a few notes on the GW.
1. Suarez. I'm not going to comment on the whole handshake controversy as this entire situation has been so badly handled all round - by the FA, by Suarez, by Liverpool, by Dalglish, and post-match celebrating, by Evra himself. From a FF perspective, Suarez reminded us that he can score goals and after the Carling Cup induced blank GW26, Liverpool have ARS, sun, qpr, WIG, nwc, AVL and perhaps a DGW squeezed in there somewhere. Those of us holding Aguero (11.2 for a guy who looks like a good home/away rotation candidate), after BLA, BOL, it may be time to look at a cheaper strike model and Suarez fits that bill.
2. Chelsea, wtf. I looked at this game and thought, 0-1, 0-2 to Chelsea. And so I moved for David Luiz in, Enrique out. Instead of looking to the more solid Tottenham back line and returning Dawson to my team or going for Assou-Ekotto. A bit of a lesson here, in that I think I tend to think in terms of a last year paradigm or let long-term reputation influence my player selection way too often. Chelsea have been such a solid defensive team for years, and so I expect a return to that this year, instead of believing what 24 GWs - not exactly a small sample - have shown; Chelsea are just not that good at the back this year. Move on.
3. I find Roberto Mancini very frustrating. I brought in Gael Clichy in my January window WC because he had started 16/21 games, including 1 self induced benching (red card), and had 7 CS. He has since started the Tottenham game (1 point) and sat the last 2 clean sheets. So, now I have 2 high risk rotation candidates in my back 5 (Clichy, Luiz). You get what you pay for and if you buy the 'budget' guy in an otherwise sturdy defense, you can't expect payoff week in and week out. Dzeko and Nasri owners, I feel your pain.
4. "Patience" as a FF watchword. I often think that if I looked at my team every 2 weeks or so, instead of obsessing every day, I would do a lot better. I'd see the forest, not the trees, and, after all, it's a 38 game schedule, and if I made only long term transfer selections, rather than schedule, form, this week's flavor - selections, I'd be a lot better off. Erm, Luiz this week. I was reminded of this with the performances of Rooney and Adebayor. These 2 have been massive FF performers in the past. Despite their barren spells this year, there was nothing to suggest that they wouldn't return to "form" (A note about "form" - a stupid word which signifies absolutely nothing other than, perhaps a slight uptick in self-confidence. I don't believe in "form" from a FF perspective. Torres isn't suffering from a loss of form, his self-confidence is shot). They sit 3rd and 7th respectively in FF points among all players over 25 GWs. The lesson: players like these will always, always return to "form" i.e., score again, at some point.
5. Blackburn 3 v. QPR 2. I knew there would be goals in this one and last Thursday and Friday, I sent the following emails to my rival ForzaInter about a possible swap I was looking at -
I have been running the numbers at the invaluable FFS/Members area. And I believe I've found an old favorite who is producing very good numbers since the New Year and who can provide me with some cash and yet kick in with goals/assists. He plays for a team who are having no trouble scoring goals this year, although it is a team which may well go down . . .
. . . here comes Friday and more nerves. My mystery midfielder from yesterday was none other than Morten Gamst Pedersen. But after further analysis overnight, I am probably going a different direction. MGP has surprisingly good attacking numbers over the last 6 GWs and with what I think will be a goal fest tomorrow and with a reasonably decent schedule ahead, he seemed a good shout as a rotation candidate . . .
I have a fond place in my heart for Gamst Pedersen because I rode him in the second half of the season a few years ago in his best FF season ever. Ultimately, MGP didn't get on the board, and I used my free for David Luiz (fail). But I think there are plenty of attacking players in these 2 teams worth looking at. Yakubu, obviously, but also David Hoilett who has quietly amassed 73 points, and sits behind, Graham, Holt, Morison, Yakubu, and Fletcher in the under 6.0 category. I wouldn't be surprised, when all is said and done, given that he starts whenever healthy, that he finishes 3rd or 4th in the budget forward category. I think MGP is worth looking at, too, at 6.2. For QPR, Zamora, obviously, but I also wonder about Buzsaky and now, again, after all the preseason hype, and first half of drawing blanks, if Adel Taarabt shouldn't be back in our thinking. Hughes seems to rate him; in the highlight show he looked terrific, and he did get an assist. QPR's schedule looks reasonably good over the near term, with their 2 hard games coming at Loftus Road. The other guy is left back Taye Taiwo - at 4.5, QPR aren't keeping clean sheets but he looks like getting forward every time QPR possess.
6. Everton 2 v. Chelsea 0. Should Everton come back into our thinking after the blank GW26 ? 4 goals conceded in their last 6 games (2 CS v. MNC and CHE at home), suggests a healthy Distin (5.1) or Heitinga (5.2) might be worth thinking about. Hibbert was dropped for Chelsea, but he is 4.6. In attack, while I've never rated him as a FF prospect, Steven Pienaar is 7.0, and Moyes is sure to start him. Perhaps when the DGW is scheduled, he should come into our thinking. Landon Donovan leaves shortly, and - dare I say it - Royston Drenthe might be given that midfield role.
7. Swansea 2 v. Norwich 3. Swansea looks safe from a relegation fight, but from a FF perspective, there has been a sharp drop in defensive returns. Swansea hasn't kept a home CS since GW15. Vorm gets enough 'saves' points - and most of us bought at ~4.0, so would lose substantial value - to justify giving him starts against mid-table/relegation candidate teams, but you wouldn't typically put a SWN defender in your lineup away, which means you haven't got SWN defender CS points since GW15, unless a SWN defender autosubbed in one of those away CS. There was a lot of love for Gylfi Sigurdsson this GW, but Danny Graham looks like the best buy here, at 5.0, he has 10 goals and sits in 7th place among forwards in FF points. Everyone above him is at least 2.8M more expensive. Edin Dzeko's 2 minute cameo kept my rival ForzaInter from getting Danny Graham's points haul auto-subbed. Thank god for small favors.
Norwich is a no go area defensively in terms of FF, although Ruddy as a cheap back up GK option works. Norwich continue to score goals and the likes of Pilkington, Surman, B. Johnson, and Holt look good value.
We've all got 2 weeks now, to assess our sides for the run-in. I may try to step away for a few days and try to see the forest for the trees . . .

GW24 Takeaway, pt. 2
1. Liverpool 0 v. Tottenham 0. Neither team covered themselves in glory in this one. Suarez should have won it for the Reds in his 20 minute cameo but - again - couldn't take his chance, consistent with his season so far. With a good goal scoring record at Ajax and with Uruguay at the international level (and not bad last year in the 2nd half of Liverpool's season), it seems crazy to believe he won't begin to bang them in at some point in the Prem. His attacking threat numbers are very good. Strange. At any rate, he remains on my Watchlist after Liverpool's blank GW26.
2. Liverpool record their 10th CS. I had 3 starting defenders who play for teams that kept CS this week and came away with zero points: Kompany, Clichy and . . . Enrique, who missed his first game since joining Liverpool. I've had him all season, fantastic FF value. I'll be keeping him but am starting to think about doubling down on this quality defensive unit (tied for 1st in CS, 2nd in 'goals allowed') - that is, after GW26. The near term schedule GW27-32 is a mixed bag but if you can hold Tottenham, you can hold anybody. And with Johnson/Skrtel/Agger/Enrique nailed on, you can go high end in G.Johnson(6.8) who offers plenty of attacking threat, or reasonably cheap for an elite team defender in Agger(5.9).
3. Tottenham record their 9th CS. I checked out of Dawson last week (for Kompany, ouch) thinking this tough stretch of games was not the time to be invested in a center back who may or may not be first choice. For reasons I cannot explain, I have a near visceral dislike of Assou-Ekotto, but it's probably time to start thinking about BAE or Walker the way we think about Richards or A.Cole. Dawson is 5.2 and is appealing at that price but sat out GW23, with Kaboul and King favored. He returned from injury in GW22 and since has started 2 of 3 games. The report Monday was Kaboul suffered a knock and so Dawson got the nod, but I wonder if Redknapp's preferred CB combo isn't Dawson/King. I've already got rotation risk Clichy, so I need to think hard about whether to dive for Dawson again.
4. Chelsea 3 v. Man Utd 3. The really important thing I take from this game from a FF perspective is the fragility of the Chelsea back line. They've kept only 6 CS this season (although 2 in the last 4 games) and sit about midtable in 'goals allowed' totals. This week's rotation of Clichy has me eyeing up a replacement and I thought about Chelsea's defense but this is a risky proposition unless you want to spend the 7.1 to get in A.Cole (6 assists to go with the 6 CS). I think Cole, Terry and Ivanovic are nailed on if fit (if you look at the season GW history, Ivanovic has only missed games he was injured). The recent red card to Cole and Terry's injury, meant Boswinga and Ivanovic both played the last 2 GWs but absent injury, I expect the Chelsea normal back 4 to be -
Ivanovic/Luiz/Terry/Cole (I think Che bought Cahill not to start - but for cover for injuries and for Prem/FACup/CL fixture congestion, see e.g., Feb 18-25, when they play 3 games in 7 days). Luiz at 6.3 is every bit a gamble, as my conjecture on Cahill was not in conjunction with the Blues' coaching staff (haha), but Chelsea's near-term schedule suggests a CS or 2 - eve/BOL/wba/STK - then mci/TOT - then avl/WIG. Luiz offers plenty of attacking threat to go with potential CS, but at 6.3, I have to be right about Cahill . . .

Takeaway from GW24 wherein we learn decisions taken after midnight are usually bad ones
As I will explore, I was one of those nervous Nellies that checked out of RvP(c). Late. Friday. Night. That decision has me back outside the top 5000, which, really, I fully deserve. Luckily, RvP is still a bit of a differential among some of the challengers in my minileague, so the news was not all bad.
1. Decisions made after midnight Friday, while drinking, usually turn out bad. I took a trip Friday night to my cottage in Michigan's Upper Pennisula. Arrived late and had a few beers. Unfortunately, I then decided to take a last look at FF (worried principally about the weather) and saw the Wenger comments about 'considering' an RvP rest. I immediately logged into my team and switched RvP(c) to Aguero(c). I'd like to say I was fooled and scream outrage at those carrying the info but . . . I was only 60/40 for RvP over Aguero in the first place. I just needed a push or, more accurately, a rationale.
The bigger point to take from this, at least from my perspective is, viewing the league from 'the other side of the pond' has its advantages and its disadvantages. The big disadvantage is that, unlike European managers, I don't have the gameday morning to have a coffee, measure up the latest news, and make a studied opinion on late developments (I could, I guess, if I was willing to get up at 4:30 am on Saturdays . . . ). My team decisions are typically made by 7 pm, EST, Friday night. I might very well have laughed off the Wenger comments had I read them in a Paris cafe Saturday morning. Probably not though.
You can have too much information in this game some times.

3. Man City keep another clean sheet, I am soooo glad I doubled down on Man City defenders and left Dempsey on my bench ! Oh, wait. My 2 MNC defenders were Kompany and Clichy. I'm okay with the occasional Clichy rotation at his price (well, maybe not) but Kompany came out of the blue (pun not intended). I picked up Kompany to cover for those CS Clichy missed out on and to double down on the defense I expect to keep the most CS in the run-in. I am going to be rethinking Clichy. My theory was that Mancini would use Kolarov in Europa league and Clichy in the Prem. Perhaps this was a 1-off with Mancini realizing Fulham were coming in to the match with 0.67 gpg away, and no established forward starting, and decided he could risk Kolarov. Anyway, I hope.
Anyway, with Kompany/Clichy on the bench, I get J.Evans(-1) and, of course, Dempsey(2), subbing in. Ouch.
4. Moses makes lineup, scores 2 FF points ! Just as he has on 16 other occasions this year. Sixteen 2-pointers seems almost impossible ! With players like McLean, Surman, Pilkington, Dyer, Sigurdsson (the favorite right now), Dyer, Buzsaky available, my desperate hope that Moses would somehow translate his good attacking numbers into FF points is near an end. Wigan have a decent near-term schedule, so I might, just out of perversity stay with him. But Oxlade-Chamberlain is only 1.0 more . . .
5. Swansea and Norwich keep rolling. I expected these 2 teams to fall off considerably in the second half but that doesn't look like happening. Both have decent near term schedules. Anyone from Vorm, Rangel, Caulker, A.Williams, C.Taylor, Allen, Dyer, Sinclair, Sigurdsson, and Graham (4.8 - 8G/2A/12BP), are worth owning, depending on your needs. Norwich is a slightly more mixed bag but Ruddy (as your budget back up GK), Pilkington, Surman, B.Johnson - all good value as a 5th midfielder, and Holt or Morison as a 3rd forward, all look like they should be in the conversation in their price range.
6. Man Utd keep the goals coming. Reports of Rooney's FF demise were greatly exagerrated. I think Man Utd attacking exposure is de riguer (I have Valencia who had a rare off-day). Man Utd have 59 goals so far, 4 behind leader Man City and 13 more goals than the 3rd highest scoring team, Arsenal. Valencia's nailed-on position in right midfield may bear some risk with Ashley Young back but I am going to live with that for now. Wayne Rooney (from the spot 2x) reminds us that he is still a FF monster. Welbeck/Hernandez are both worth monitoring and if one should emerge, Man Utd have a good run of games beginning in GW28. In defense, despite his nightmare GW, J.Evans price means he's worth owning, in my opinion.

As a Liverpool fan, I am hoping for a win; as a FF manager I am hoping further for a CS . . .

The Takeaway from GW23, the transfer window and the short week ahead
A strange GW, the difference between a great week and good week was simply whether you had Bale(c) or RvP(c). Sigh. Unfortunately, I also had 13 points on my bench (Enrique and Williamson) to further frustrate (well, 18 points if I add Moses). Nonetheless, 67 points resulted in a slight world ranking bump inside the 3300 mark and did me no damage in my minileague where a few managers put in 80+ point weeks to charge up the table. A few notes . . .
1. The very tight circle of trust. Almost all active teams now have a midfield which includes at least 4 of: Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, Sessegnon; includes some variation on RvP/Aguero/budget at forward; includes Vorm or Krul in goal or both; and includes defenders from MNC, NWC, Enrique and/or Assou-Ekotto plus budget guy. Which means this was a good week for most active teams, the only significant differentials being Krul over Vorm (I lucked into a middle position with Mignolet) and captaining Bale. If you are at or near the top of your minileague and your team looks like this, you aren't too worried; if you are trying to make up ground on your minileague leader you are scratching your head trying to figure out under what rocks those differential guys might be hiding.
2. Everton 1 v. Manchester City 0. I watched the replay of this game on FSC and was stunned by the quality of Everton's defending (w/o Jagielka or Distin) and overall play. Fellaini bossed Silva, the back 4 were tight and tidy, and Drenthe and Donovan looked terrific on the counter. The unpronounceably named Argentine guy on top put himself about and looked dangerous throughout. The entire team looked composed in defense and on the ball. Is this the same team we were all running from after their DGW fail ? Drenthe made the goal and looked dangerous every time he touched the ball. Unfortunately, with Pienaar back (who I don't rate at 7.0 as a FF prospect), you wonder if he'll continue in the starting 11. Man City seemed to have one of those days, perhaps less than inspired by Mancini who said after the game he had not prepared the team properly, thinking the game would be 'easy'. Moyes may not have a full cast of international superstars at his disposal, but no game against a Moyes team is ever easy. Still, Aguero and Dzeko had a few chances and Man City dominated possession. As a holder of Aguero, I'm a little worried at three straight 2-pointers. But with FUL, BLA, and BOL visiting in the next 4 GW, it seems prudent to hold.
3. Swansea 1 v. Chelsea 1. This is the game that has convinced me it's time to drop Sturridge. Swansea bossed large portions of this game and Chelsea just look so deliberate and slow in the build up. I remember I had Torres in my team for a couple of weeks early on in the season and as I watched this one I thought 'what was I thinking ?' Chelsea still sit in the 4th CL spot (and 4th in goals scored) but it's hard to see any value in this team right now except perhaps Terry, A.Cole (after his red card suspension) or Ivanovic if their recent defensive solidity holds. You might put Cahill in here too, if he ever gets a start. Despite Boswinga's goal, I think AVB will move Ivanovic to RB; Ivanovic has started virtually every game this season in which he's been fit.
4. The RvP(c) fail. I followed this game on the BBC text and the Dutchman apparently hit the woodwork twice, was thwarted by a Bogdan wonder save on another occasion and laid on 2 balls OC and Ramsey should have finished. The Ramsey miss is nothing new; I had him for a few weeks and saw him play a number of games on TV and he may be the least composed midfielder in front of goal in the EPL.
But the (c) fail (and I have a strong tradition of (c) fails) has got me thinking about a rule I used to follow very consistently until last year - call it the Stoosher Captain Selection Rule (the "SCSR").

Under the SCSR, Bale(c) would have been a no-brainer this week. And I could have done a lot worse than a Valencia/Silva, home/away armband rotation over the last 10 GWs. Well, actually, I have done a lot worse.
RvP at home v. Blackburn means and with only Moses at home in my midfield, I'll probably postpone the rule's application this week. But I may make some adjustment to my midfield to ensure a good home option every week.
5. The transfer window. I think QPR's transfer business has been brilliant. I posted in December I thought QPR were going down because I thought Warnock was in over his head in the Prem, but with Hughes in charge and these transfers, I think QPR will rise back to midtable mediocrity. Hughes has revamped QPR's attack and fortified the back line. If you have Helguson, time to sell because unless Cisse (6.5) or Zamora (6.7) get injured, he's only going to get time-wasting cameos, in my opinion. With QPR's near term schedule (WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol, LIV), I like either of Cisse or Zamora. I liked Cisse from his time at Liverpool and it's hard to think of a better target guy than Zamora who, in FF terms, provides assists and BPs to make up for his lack of a great goal scoring record. And if Hughes is okay with Taye Taiwo's over-the-top attacking play, he looks a good value at 4.5.
After Everton's play against MNC, I'm intrigued by Nikica Jelavic (6.5), transferred in from Rangers. Historically, he has a good goal scoring record at Rangers, and I doubt Moyes invested heavily (for Everton) to provide him with a seat at Goodison. With Louis Saha gone to Tottenham, and Moyes apparently not convinced by unpronounceably named Argentine guy, Jelavic should go straight in to the starting lineup. Reports are he is 6'2" - and I would guess a few Baines crosses will be aimed at his big ol' Croat head. Everton have a tough near term schedule but they get CHE, TOT, and ARS at home. Man City can attest Moyes's boys are not a pushover at Goodison.
6. As the worm turns. With Sessegnon, Dempsey, Valencia, and Bale all away, and all with very tough away fixtures against teams perfectly capable of keeping clean sheets, I am guessing we won't see a 45 point average (which was probably closer to a 65 point average if you throw out all the ghost ships; of the top 20 teams in my minileague, only 3 had 50 points or less, 12 had 65 points or more and 2 were 80+) this week. Unless RvP gets back on track.
1. The very tight circle of trust. Almost all active teams now have a midfield which includes at least 4 of: Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, Sessegnon; includes some variation on RvP/Aguero/budget at forward; includes Vorm or Krul in goal or both; and includes defenders from MNC, NWC, Enrique and/or Assou-Ekotto plus budget guy. Which means this was a good week for most active teams, the only significant differentials being Krul over Vorm (I lucked into a middle position with Mignolet) and captaining Bale. If you are at or near the top of your minileague and your team looks like this, you aren't too worried; if you are trying to make up ground on your minileague leader you are scratching your head trying to figure out under what rocks those differential guys might be hiding.
2. Everton 1 v. Manchester City 0. I watched the replay of this game on FSC and was stunned by the quality of Everton's defending (w/o Jagielka or Distin) and overall play. Fellaini bossed Silva, the back 4 were tight and tidy, and Drenthe and Donovan looked terrific on the counter. The unpronounceably named Argentine guy on top put himself about and looked dangerous throughout. The entire team looked composed in defense and on the ball. Is this the same team we were all running from after their DGW fail ? Drenthe made the goal and looked dangerous every time he touched the ball. Unfortunately, with Pienaar back (who I don't rate at 7.0 as a FF prospect), you wonder if he'll continue in the starting 11. Man City seemed to have one of those days, perhaps less than inspired by Mancini who said after the game he had not prepared the team properly, thinking the game would be 'easy'. Moyes may not have a full cast of international superstars at his disposal, but no game against a Moyes team is ever easy. Still, Aguero and Dzeko had a few chances and Man City dominated possession. As a holder of Aguero, I'm a little worried at three straight 2-pointers. But with FUL, BLA, and BOL visiting in the next 4 GW, it seems prudent to hold.
3. Swansea 1 v. Chelsea 1. This is the game that has convinced me it's time to drop Sturridge. Swansea bossed large portions of this game and Chelsea just look so deliberate and slow in the build up. I remember I had Torres in my team for a couple of weeks early on in the season and as I watched this one I thought 'what was I thinking ?' Chelsea still sit in the 4th CL spot (and 4th in goals scored) but it's hard to see any value in this team right now except perhaps Terry, A.Cole (after his red card suspension) or Ivanovic if their recent defensive solidity holds. You might put Cahill in here too, if he ever gets a start. Despite Boswinga's goal, I think AVB will move Ivanovic to RB; Ivanovic has started virtually every game this season in which he's been fit.
4. The RvP(c) fail. I followed this game on the BBC text and the Dutchman apparently hit the woodwork twice, was thwarted by a Bogdan wonder save on another occasion and laid on 2 balls OC and Ramsey should have finished. The Ramsey miss is nothing new; I had him for a few weeks and saw him play a number of games on TV and he may be the least composed midfielder in front of goal in the EPL.

Differentials are getting hard to come by
With Ba and Cisse returning early, and with Balotelli's suspension pushing Dzeko into some manager's thoughts (only me and a few others apparently, there appears to be a Ba feeding frenzy), I've been thinking about team make-up and the differentials that will (i) help me grow my minileague lead (rust never sleeps) or (ii) might help others improve their minileague position.
I guess the key point is the lack of differentials we're seeing in most teams (I am excluding the 'ghost ship' teams here). I am seeing a lot of RMT teams with, essentially, 5 mids and 3 forwards a manager will want in his team most weeks.
So you'll see something like -
Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Valencia/Sessegnon - RvP/Aguero/Sturridge with a plan to bring in Ba for Sturridge)
Of course, you can only start 7. And this issue is typically dismissed with the rationale 'it's a good problem to have'. This may be contrarian but, well, no, it's not. It's a waste of assets. If we assume you've paid at least 6.5 for the least of your front 8 (as in the example here), you are wasting at least 1.0/1.5 every week - and more if you sit anyone costing more that, if we presume one's bench should be filled with 4.0-5.5(at most) guys.
I currently have Moses (Bale/Valencia/Sessegnon/Dempsey) in my midfield but have been thinking about bringing Silva or another elite or tier 2 midfielder in. But that sets up a 5-man midfield with players I don't want to sub out and a front 3 I won't be inclined to sit either (RvP/Aguero/Sturridge(or Ba, if I jump on that bandwagon)). Now Sessegnon/Ba set up a perfect NWC/SUN rotation pairing. But. Of Sessegnon's 5G/8A, 3G/3A have come away; Ba has actually scored more goals away from St. James Park than in its friendly confines. And you are wasting significant funds having these 6.5+ or the 7.3+ assets on your bench. In my case, I can put a number on it, since I have the 4.8 Moses in my team as perfect bench fodder (90 min every week, occasional 3+ games) - I waste 1.7+ sitting Sessegnon or would waste 2.4+ if I acquired and sat Ba. That's the difference between sitting bench fodder and having the supposed 'good' problem. So.
This leads me to a couple of conclusions. You either need a bench fodder player in your front 8; someone whose role is to serve as an able replacement in the event one of your front 7 sits; or you need 2 high end budget guys to rotate in your front 8. A second conclusion about differentials follows from a rough eyeballing of most RMTs - most teams (active, as opposed to the 'ghost ship' teams still floating around out there - about half of my minileague, for instance) are settling on a selection of 7/8 from among about 14 front players-
Silva/Bale/Valencia/Dempsey/Sessegnon/Walters/Dyer/Nani(inj?)
RvP/Rooney/Aguero/Adebayor/Sturridge/Ba/Dzeko
Only Dyer looks like he is still subject to selection as a budget alternative, otherwise teams are loading up on this group of elite guys or mid-price guys who have so far proved to have significant value. The good news is selecting 7 from this group does afford many managers excess funds. What to do then ?
My conclusion here is perhaps controversial but it is this - with the 'staleness' (or lack of differentials) of attacking selection options, differentials will come from (1) the steady accretion of points in defense or (2) opting for a sound rotation strategy with 2 or even 4 'under-the-radar' types in your attacking positions. With respect to (2) here, there aren't a ton of options that I see at the right price (Ramires/Zamora is one at the high-end of what you might want to pay for rotation guys) or who are guaranteed starts (Sessegnon/Ben Arfa in this category, in that Ben Arfa's place is not nailed down). But if you examine the schedule and the 'value' filter in FPL or review the numbers in the FFS Members section, you may be able to find a really solid pairing or 2.
So the first option seems perhaps the best path forward - spend the extra cash afforded by some of the mid-priced options among the 14 or so 'standard' attacking picks and add an extra elite team* defender even 2; and gamble on one of these selections being a defender with some offensive upside (Vermaelen, G.Johnson, A.Cole, Richards, Ivanovic). I might also even recommend thinking about a Hart or Reina or a Lindegaard/deGea combo in goal and doubling down as your pick's schedule presents CS opportunities. This is contrary to most standard FF manager advice and certainly won't see your team rocket up the table. But a steady accumulation of CS for 2-3 defenders can turn a lot of 30-40 point weeks into 50+. Simply put, if you are paying attention, your attacking differentials are limited to timely hitting the armband selection a few weeks in a row, since most teams have the same attacking players. Are 4 elite team defenders too many ? I think it might be a big differential.
*For argument sake, I am going to put MNC, MUN, CHE, ARS and LIV in this 'elite' defense category, although an argument can be made that TOT have kept more CS and deserve the designation more than CHE. And the argument can be made against ARS inclusion, although my view is they are a different team w/Vermaelen at center back. I guess I would make the further qualification that you should always look at the near-term (6 games out or so) schedule too, because aside from the 2 Manchesters, all of the teams in this group have had ups and downs.

Wildcarding
On the back of 3 straight red arrows, I used my January WC at the earliest possible opportunity. Besides the fact that I'm simply weak-willed when it comes to WC (I revamped my team in GW2 after FPL screwed the pooch in GW1, then used my normal WC in GW7), I also felt the team needed some shake-up after I had dropped out of the top 10,000. Not that I am used to those giddy heights but to paraphrase a great Woody Allen line, a FF team is like a shark; when it's not moving forward, you've got a dead shark. Or something. Anyway, my GW20 team will be on the left, and I'll bold the guys I brought in on the right, then offer some commentary.

I seriously thought about riding the American for the rest of the season and dropping Vorm for, say Ruddy, as a pure backup, but I wouldn't have made enough money on Vorm to justify it. I also think 2 relatively inexpensive GK who rotate well is the way to go. Vorm is the only guy I've had in my team since GW1 and I can see SWN keeping a few more CS. I went for Mignolet at 1.3 in savings on Friedel and I think MON has reinstilled belief in SUN, so I like Mignolet in tandem with Vorm. There are better rotation candidates (Al-Haibsi, Hennessey, Foster) with Vorm, but I think MON has the ship pointed in the right direction and I think Mignolet looks a top keeper.

A quick look at the left hand column and you can see why I wanted to WC. I bought Enrique early on and LIV continue to offer good value in defense. J.Evans is virtually nailed on at MUN on his return from injury and especially so now that P.Jones is out. On 3.7% ownership, Evans has seven clean sheets in a part-time season. I like NWC's defense but I think Williamson has a slightly better chance of getting a goal from a set piece than the defensive minded Simpson; this was a sideways move pricewise for me, so an easy one to make. I'm not going to recap my stupidity in bringing in Hanley but it's quite clear that he had to go; McAuley is cheap but WBA are just too inconsistent to justify anyone in that defense except maybe Foster in goal. I feel a MNC defender is essential and Clichy is the cheapest guy in the bunch, although I'll acknowledge he is under some threat from Kolarov. I almost went for Lescott but I think he's under threat from Toure when he returns from ACN and I didn't want to burn a transfer later. I went for Michael Dawson here, although I'm going to acknowledge this was a mistake; I was overly concerned that TOT were playing WW in GW21, and I was afraid all those in my league with BAE would steal 6 points from me. Of course, Wolves scored and it was a pointless exercise. I will probably keep Dawson v. Wigan in GW23 (although he too, is under threat from Ledley King as we saw in the MNC game) and then swap him out for a budget guy that rotates well with Williamson or 'big up' to a MNC guy, like Kompany.
A bigger point here about the defense; and that point is the so-called 'Merritt Rule', named after my good friend and manager of ForzaInter, often referred to here (he's 3rd in our minileague and in 5 years of playing this game I've beaten him only once). The Merritt Rule is simple: a FF team must carry 3 'elite' team defenders, preferably the cheapest ones that start, but 3 even if you have to pay a premium for one. This was an iron clad rule for me until last year when it seemed like CS became less predictable. But as you can see above, I'm back as a believer in the rule (Enrique, Clichy, Evans). I am also thinking about the Merritt Rule + 1; I am toying with the idea of replacing Dawson with another MNC defender.

I will only have lost 0.4 on Silva if I get him back; which I am thinking about. I wouldn't recommend dropping Silva; when you watch MNC and you see the guy get every 3rd touch on that team, you know an assist is coming. Plus, he's on 46% ownership. My rationale was: I needed the money for Aguero, and Aguero's points will 'cover' the loss of Silva. Not so far. I feel less chuffed about Nani; Valencia looks the more dangerous midfielder for MUN and Dempsey, while playing for a team averaging 0.67 gpg away from Craven Cottage, is a steady performer, who, at the end of the day, will be north of 160 FF points this year. Until Rooney gets his mojo back, Valencia is plenty of attacking MUN cover.
I also looked at a 2 budget rotation model in midfield (w/3 'elite' mids and 3 'elite' forwards), and guys like M.Davies and C.Eagles(BOL), A.Surman(NOR), J.Morrison(WBA), D.Murphy(FUL), S.Petrov and S.Ireland (AVL), and N.Dyer and way under the radar Gylfi Sigurdsson (SWN), all look like worthy guys you could rotate consistently and expect returns.

I think you are crazy not to own RvP. Essentially, I plan to captain him about 90% of the time. If you don't have him by now, you've got to think about his price and whether you can get good value for that money elsewhere. But his goalscoring record over the last 12 months is phenomenal. I kept Sturridge, although I actually dropped him and brought in Yakubu, made money off Yakubu's price rise, and brought Sturridge back. I'm not sold on Sturridge (well, not sold on Chelsea), but he's reasonably cheap for access to the 4th highest goal scoring team in the Prem. And he's their leading goalscorer at forward. But he's the guy I might drop for the cash if I decide to bring Silva back in. There are a number of budget forward options who might match Sturridge's goal production thi year: Morison(NOR), Helguson(QPR), Graham(SWN), Yakubu(BLA), Fletcher(WW). My favorite in the high-end budget category is Zamora.
I also don't think Adebayor has forgotten how to score, but I've felt like Aguero is a 'must have' for most of the season, so I sacrificed Adebayor, who I'd had since very, very early in the season. Unfortunately, I didn't really examine Aguero's record in detail until his second straight 2-pointer for me; 8 goals in GW1-5; 6 goals in GW6-22. With Balotelli threatened with a suspension, I am looking at Dzeko either in tandem with Aguero or as a replacement for Aguero. I still feel good about Aguero (good attacking numbers, looks like MNC's main dangerman when you watch MNC), but I'm a little nervous that I sacrificed Silva for him.
So those were my selections and the thinking behind them. I've also outlined some variations I thought about running with; and I've mentioned my trepidation about some of my moves. Keep the wheat and toss the chaffe. The WC has paid off so far; 2 green arrows and into the top 3300+ in the world. But rust never sleeps . . .

I also looked at a 2 budget rotation model in midfield (w/3 'elite' mids and 3 'elite' forwards), and guys like M.Davies and C.Eagles(BOL), A.Surman(NOR), J.Morrison(WBA), D.Murphy(FUL), S.Petrov and S.Ireland (AVL), and N.Dyer and way under the radar Gylfi Sigurdsson (SWN), all look like worthy guys you could rotate consistently and expect returns.

I think you are crazy not to own RvP. Essentially, I plan to captain him about 90% of the time. If you don't have him by now, you've got to think about his price and whether you can get good value for that money elsewhere. But his goalscoring record over the last 12 months is phenomenal. I kept Sturridge, although I actually dropped him and brought in Yakubu, made money off Yakubu's price rise, and brought Sturridge back. I'm not sold on Sturridge (well, not sold on Chelsea), but he's reasonably cheap for access to the 4th highest goal scoring team in the Prem. And he's their leading goalscorer at forward. But he's the guy I might drop for the cash if I decide to bring Silva back in. There are a number of budget forward options who might match Sturridge's goal production thi year: Morison(NOR), Helguson(QPR), Graham(SWN), Yakubu(BLA), Fletcher(WW). My favorite in the high-end budget category is Zamora.
I also don't think Adebayor has forgotten how to score, but I've felt like Aguero is a 'must have' for most of the season, so I sacrificed Adebayor, who I'd had since very, very early in the season. Unfortunately, I didn't really examine Aguero's record in detail until his second straight 2-pointer for me; 8 goals in GW1-5; 6 goals in GW6-22. With Balotelli threatened with a suspension, I am looking at Dzeko either in tandem with Aguero or as a replacement for Aguero. I still feel good about Aguero (good attacking numbers, looks like MNC's main dangerman when you watch MNC), but I'm a little nervous that I sacrificed Silva for him.
So those were my selections and the thinking behind them. I've also outlined some variations I thought about running with; and I've mentioned my trepidation about some of my moves. Keep the wheat and toss the chaffe. The WC has paid off so far; 2 green arrows and into the top 3300+ in the world. But rust never sleeps . . .

GW22 Takeaway: once a season satisfaction
When you spend as much time researching, thinking, obsessing over this game as I do, when you get it right, it is so truly satisfying. A 74 point week gave me clear breathing room in my minileague and took me to 3300+ in the world. I used my Jan window WC in GW21(more later) and brought in Sessengon and Valencia and used my free this week to bring in Dempsey for Nani. The Portugese tormented Johan Djourou to no FF effect; Dempsey, of course, went all hat-trick on Newcastle. That threesome were able to cover a backline that garnered me zero, zip, nada, this week - Clichy, Williamson, Enrique - my only defensive points coming from Sunderland's Mignolet. A few thoughts on the GW . . .
1. Norwich keep Chelsea off the board. I haven't been a believer in Norwich; I've felt they would fall to earth sooner or later. Not so sure after a steely display and well-deserved point v. Chelsea (and learned Zak Whitbread is American by birth; Klinnsman you clueless f***, give this guy a call!!!). Unfortunately, the Norwich midfield is a Lambert roulette wheel in terms of selection. I really, really like Andrew Surman in this team at 4.4; his attacking statistics are good and in the games I have seen he looks a proper EPL winger, but Lambert has had him in and out recently. Morison is still the guy to look at in this team if your forward model is 2 elites/1 budget, but I've also been impressed with Grant Holt too.
As for Chelsea, pffft. They look positively ponderous in attack. I have Sturridge, who still seems the best way in to a team 4th in the league in goals scored, but my patience is running out, especially with so many budget options producing goals, 2 on offer in this one. Meanwhile I was blown away that nearly 70,000 managers brought in Gary Cahill on his switch to Chelsea. No reassurance of a starting role and Chelsea kept a CS w/o him. Strange waste of a transfer for a guy who definitely should be on your Watchlist, not on your bench, just yet.
2. Everton 1 v. Backburn 1. The only thing interesting to me about this game was how dangerous David Dunn looked. At 6.2 and with a looooooooooooong injury history, he's a gamble. But when fit,well, he scored 9 league goals in 1700+ min 2 years ago and had 113 FF points. And could easily have had a hat-trick Saturday. If you are rotating a couple of budget guys in midfield, Dunn's not the worst punt as one of the 2.
3. Fulham have a crazy second half. I'm not going to say much here; I bigged up Dempsey in November and talked him up last week; I have reservations about being invested in Fulham's attack on the road but I put those aside and took my own advise and invested in the American. I bigged up Zamora and Ruiz last week; Senderos and Kelly are worth thinking about in this team. Danny Murphy is on pens and free kicks, and has terrific numbers in terms of possession and passing and is 2.5 cheaper than Dempsey or will be as the Dempsey bandwagon leaves the station.
4. Neither Chelsea, nor Liverpool, nor Arsenal seem worthy of grabbing the 4th CL spot. I've spoken about a Chelsea performance best described as, well, plodding; but Liverpool were carved open and then outworked by Bolton (go on you Wanderers !!!) and created next to nothing over the 90 minutes. I'm keeping Enrique but it's hard to look at Liverpool's attacking players and think 'I need him in'. It's a team that desperately needs Suarez back; if not to score, at least to create.
And Arsenal look an RvP injury away from 15th. I thought Ramsey might offer some FF value but he can't hit the ocean from the fucking pier; Walcott seemed to have been under the impression that Arsenal were in blue yesterday, and Andrey 'dead man walking' Arshavin came on for Oxley-Chamberlain in perhaps the most inexplicable substitution I've seen. Ever. The outside back situation is not of Wenger's creating (6 injuries) but it's hard to invest in a defense which gets beat like a drum down the left and right for 90 straight minutes. Wenger's also got a bit of a dilemna ahead; Villa in the FA Cup on the weekend and then 2 league matches in the 7 days that follow. Since Wenger appears to have no one not named van Persie or not in Africa who can, you know, score a goal, will he preserve RvP for league or throw him in v. Villa in an effort to grab some hardware ? If he plays in the FA Cup, RvP won't be my captain in GW23 v. Bolton because I don't think he'll play.
5. Phil Jones injury. It looked bad, but he is listed as out for 2-3 weeks. Whether that's an honest assessment who knows. Man Utd's schedule may scare some, but I expect a Jonny Evans bandwagon. If Evans (4.5) wasn't nailed on before, he is now. You can get access to 3 starters (most games) in the 3 meanest defenses in the EPL for $15M (Evans, Agger, Clichy). I'm just sayin'.

GW21 Takeaway
54 points on the GW off the WC (more later) and a green arrow for a slight bump to 11,893 in the world. I went back and forth on the armband between Nani and RvP and finally chose Nani. I saw a comment on another blog to the effect that the manager had simply quit trying to guess the hot hand or play the home/away odds and simply handed the armband every week to van Persie. That's starting to make sense after so many captain 'fails'.
1. Aston Villa 1 v. Everton 1. Both teams hanging around midtable. But while I think Everton are a no-go FF area, Villa are kind of interesting. Darren Bent is having a 'quiet' year, I guess, but he has 7 goals and 72 FF points (for one of the most negative coaches in the EPL, in my opinion). And he's got 2 goals in his last 3 games. And now McLeish has given Stephen Ireland a role in the hole behind Bent. At 5.6, and having a world of talent, Ireland has the potential to be a massive value and differential if he continues in that attacking position. Another interesting guy in this lineup is Stilian Petrov who came to Villa a few years ago advertized as a sort of attacking central mid from Celtic but has played deep and as a holding mid for Villa. Until now. His EA Sport PPI is the best for any player under 6.0, his attacking numbers as compiled on FFS are good, he's nailed on and isn't the worst option at 5.9. Warnock at 4.9 has played every single minute this season, has 5 CS, 1 goal, and 2 assists. And Shay Givens is back (4.7) after a 6 game injury layoff. And I didn't mention Gabby Agbonlahor with 4 goals, 7 assists, at 7.0. Oh, now I did. Villa have wol, QPR, nwc, MNC, wig, bla, FUL, BOL before the schedule turns ugly in mid March.
2. Blackburn 3 v. Fulham 1, go figure. Yakubu sent off, Blackburn still win. Fulham are 4-3-3 at home, 16 GS 15 GA, 1-5-5, away 7 GS 14 GA. This is what scares me about biting on Dempsey - for 8.5 you want to play him every week but . . . he plays for a team scoring .64 gpg away. Fulham have kept 7 CS this year, 4 home, 3 away (WIG, WBA, SUN). What the numbers tell me is go budget on Fulham. Zamora, Ruiz, Dembele (no, seriously, good attacking numbers) all might be decent value as a rotation forward if you are going with the '2 elite/1 budget' model or maybe a budget defender. Kelly or Senderos anyone ?
3. Lampard, goal. Frank has scored 9 goals, 2 more than any other midfielder. He's still one of the leading midfield FF point scorers, and but for AVB sitting him for Raul Meireles (really?) , there is little question he would be the leading midfield point scorer. If, if, AVB, comes to his senses and gives Lampard a run. Massive differential. I wonder who Essien's return threatens ? I've felt it was Ramires. Same box-to-box type midfielder only better. We'll see.
4. Liverpool have scored 24 goals in 21 games. When 0-0 at home to Stoke feels like a decent result, you know you are struggling for goals. 10 teams, 19th place Bolton included, have scored more than Liverpool. I love Stevie Gerrard but I ain't going near Liverpool's attack. That said, Liverpool have conceded the second fewest goals. The short-term schedule's not that great - bol, wol, TOT, mun, EVE, ARS, but with 5 CS away, at least 1 and maybe 2 Liverpool defenders isn't the worst idea.
5. Swansea, for real ? Despite Wenger's whining about the penalty call, Swansea simply outplayed and outworked Arsenal. This was the first game Swansea have conceded more that 1 goal at home and they had conceded only 4 all year. Vorm, Rangel, Caulker, Williams, C. Taylor all good investments. If you are late to the party or want to double up, Caulker is 4.0. Sinclair at 6.3 has 90 FF points. And Dyer looked brilliant against Arsenal at 4.7. At different times, Joe Allen, Kemy Augustien, Mark Gower have all looked good value but it looks down to Sinclair and Dyer as the midfield picks here. But the other guy here who is interesting is forward Danny Graham. His price dropped like a stone as he opened the season with 6 goalless games; in the 15 since - 7 goals, 2 assists, 11 BPs. Swansea have been poor away though, and they play 4 of the next 6 away . . . but if you are playing the 2 elite/1 budget forward model, why not Danny Graham at home v. CHE and NOR and a flyer away at WBA ?

GW20 Takeaway Part 2; and a bit about the WC
A drop to 12,000+ in the world, but more importantly, my minileague lead has shrunk to 31 points. And my chief rival, ForzaInter is within 47. There were a few lessons in the final game of GW20 and we are into the January window Wild Card.
1. I did not see the Assou-Ekottu freight train coming. He has now matched his prior career total for goals scored and exceeded his career assist total. With a 24 point GW he is now within 3 points of his highest previous season FF point total. I think I spent some time in a previous post slagging off AE and Walker vis-a-vis Friedel. I'll just throw some salt and pepper on that crow . . . but I want to point out a really interesting bit of minileague strategy exercised by my minileague rival ForzaInter. We went into the GW with Friedel; I had Bale and Adebayor as well. I had fairly advertized I was captaining Friedel. Forza performed a neat bit of neutralizing any advantage I might gain if Tottenham kept 2 CS - which, of course, they did. He selected Bale and AE for a 4 point hit and captained Bale. Pure upside for him; if Tottenham kept 2 CS, he had doubled down on TOT defense, while also maximizing his chances to take advantage if TOT broke big. And then it was pure gravy when AE broke big. No doubt in my mind Forza planned that bit. I guess the lesson here is to take a comparative look at your rival's team to see if you can find away to neutralize an advantage and maximize a differential. Clever.
2. Stay invested in Tottenham ? Certainly for another week. Tottenham won the reverse fixture 2-0 and Wolves have come in for a few tonkings away. Wigan comes to town in GW23. But, in general, the TOT near-term schedule looks reasonably difficult (WW, mci, WIG, liv, NWC, ars, MUN, eve, STK, che). That said, it's not a bad bunch of home games (and attacking titans Everton). I guess I might continue to run with Tottenham defenders if I have them in and you can rotate them, unless you are a true believer in Tottenham and then let them ride as you might with MNC, MUN, or LIV defenders. A guy who might have passed under the radar this week in all the AE excitement is Michael Dawson. A Redknapp favorite, a BP in his first game back and 5.2. If Tottenham add Samba . . .

I spent a lot of time turning over various options, and settled on Drenthe. Suffice to say, had Drenthe stayed on the bench I would have added 1 more point with McAuley as an autosub. Think.

But the most important point is, whether you want to go early in the January window or late - have a plan.

But the most important point is, whether you want to go early in the January window or late - have a plan.

GW20 (and FA Cup) Takeaway
Another red arrow ahead unless Friedel can keep a CS or Simpson and McAuley's 8 points off the bench pulls me out of a jam. My gamble on Friedel as captain this DGW was premised on 2 low scoring games; two things I didn't think through clearly enough were (i) if Bale scored or grabbed an assist, BP were sure to follow and (ii) Friedel, despite his high saves total, was unlikely to face a lot of shots from offense-shy WBA and Everton, and therefore unlikely to get saves points in these 2 matches. I'm not having regrets just yet, because I think Friedel's CS chances are as good as Bale's goal/assist chances but all my minileague rivals have Bale captained. Oh well. 1. I think Manchester City will walk it. The win over Liverpool was superb and the fight back with 10 men against Man United demonstrated some character. No other team has their talent. And while pundits seem to think it's a 2 horse race, I don't think Jones/Ferdinand/Smalling/Evra/Evans/Rafael are good enough. What's this mean for FF ? Well, along with a good schedule in the near term (wig, TOT, eve, FUL, avl, BLA, BOL), it suggests to me 3 MNC guys are a good idea. Kompany's red card means he'll miss a couple of EPL games (unless the appeal is won) but Kompany, Richards and Lescott (with Kolo Toure at ACN) look good bets in back. I like Clichy at 5.6 but Kolarov presents a rotation risk. Silva is the obvious midfield guy, selected by 44% of managers, but Johnson and Milner play often enough to think about. A guy I am going to look at on his return from ACN is Yaya Toure. Significanly cheaper than Silva, he is the one everpresent for Mancini and has plenty of attacking upside. At forward, it's all about Aguero. You'll have to make the judgment whether Adebayor or Sturridge represent better value or whether Rooney's return to FF relevance is upon us. but MUN's schedule is pretty tough short term. Dzeko at 8.0 is still the 7th leading scoring FF forward. He's bee a massive sell candidate since mid-November when starts (and goals) dried up, but if Aguero is a stretch for the budget . . . I don't think Edin Dzeko has forgotten how to score. In addition to thinking Man City will walk to the title, I also think Man Utd's loss of Vidic and midfield woes suggest they may be in play in terms of the CL battle. With their attacking strength, I think they'll score goals, but anyone looking at Man Utd's starting 11 in any given GWwill have a hard time suggesting to me it's a better 11 than Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal are fielding. In FF terms, I'm not going to drop Nani, nor would I drop Rooney if I had him, but it's wait and see for me with the MUN defensive assets, especially with ars, STK, che, LIV, nor, tot waiting after this week's game versus Bolton. 2. Clint Dempsey time ? I've bigged up Dempsey a couple times this year, and he is sitting there or thereabouts 10th in FF points among all players. Fulham have a terrific schedule ahead, aside from a trip to MNC. Bryan Ruiz has started every game since GW14 and has 2 goals and 2 assists and is priced at 6.0. Obviously Yakubu or Fletcher have scored better at the same price range but with Fulham's schedule and an increasing comfort in the EPL may mean Ruiz, at 0.2% ownership could be a quality differential. Another forward, at 5.2, who looks terrific when you watch Fulham, is Moussa Dembele. Nailed on starter since GW9 for Martin Jol, Dembele does a ton of work and has a ton of skill. No FF product yet, but if 1 goes in will more follow ? More Fulham . . . Senderos has started every games since GW12, including 3 CS. At 4.3. A super steady point getter at near budget range is Danny Murphy at 6.1. An awful lot of 2/3 point performances but he has 2G, 4A and at 6.1, you could do worse than that for a 4th midfielder. Murphy's on pens too. If Bobby Zamora is healthy and has sorted his pissing match with Jol, he may be worth a look at 6.6. My trepidation about Zamora is he never seems to play a full season; 1 season in the last 5 over 2200+ min. 3. Everton. DGW bust ? Lots of managers looked for ways to get in Everton players after loading up on Tottenham. Most of us grasped at straws (sheepishly raises hand, ahem, Drenthe) thinking Baines or Osman or Drenthe or Hibbert or Jagielka were worth a look. Little did we know Tim Howard would have the best look all night at the Bolton goal. Everton were and are a no-go area in FF and I am sorry I convinced myself otherwise. This is what the January WC was designed for. 4. QPR. In a previous post I suggested Wigan and Bolton might escape and QPR and Norwich were my candidates to go down with Blackburn. In FF terms, my thought was only Yakubu and Morison were ownable from those 3 teams. If Mark Hughes is, indeed, named as QPR manager, I wonder if QPR won't become a much stronger side and maybe a Ferdinand or a Gabbidon might become worth owning. I'll be looking at the first few results to see if there is a 'Martin O'Neil' effect at QPR - just as Sunderland suddenly look like a top half team. | 6:58 |

The Takeaway from GW19
This post is coming off late as I was up north this weekend enjoying the winter, which has really been very late in arriving . . . GW19 saw me drop just out of the top 10,000, a worrying trend. Luckily I captained (as my last post's convoluted logic suggested I might) RvP and he grabbed a goal and the BPs to save my GW.
This week I have gambled on Friedel for the armband. Everyone chasing me in my minileague has Bale captained. Cue Bale hat-trick over the DGW. The logic in the Friedel selection was relatively straightforward; West Brom and Everton are in good form lately, in terms of their defensive organization and results. West Brom kept a CS against Man City and, but for a ping-pong goal from Everton, would have kept a second CS in GW19. They have conceded 4 in their last 3 road games, but Hodgson's stamp is starting to show on this team. Everton have been very strong defensively recently (5 goals in the last 8 games, never more than 1 conceded, 3 CS), including a CS away @ West Brom and 1 conceded at Arsenal a few weeks back. But neither West Brom nor Everton have shown much in attack. So, 2-1 and 1-0 wins for Tottenham, probably mean 3+7 returns for Friedel. So, in my mind, a quite conservative play. And with both Bale and Adebayor in my team, I won't be too chuffed if either has a big score.
A few takeaways from GW19 . . .
1. FF has grown up. Even as recently as last year, I would have expected some managers to have slept through the quick turnaround from GW19 to GW20 and missed the deadline, thereby leaving RvP or Nani captained, and failing to add the requisite 2/3 Tottenham players before the deadline. Wrong. Even in my fairly mediocre minileague (8/49 players at +1000 points), all of the top 15 or so managers made their switches and captain's changes. (Sigh) Ah, for the good old days when a GW like this was made to put massive distance between the observant manager and the also-rans . . .
2. Rooney, WTF. Completely perplexed by Rooney's absence for the Blackburn game, I saw something in The Guardian about a 'dinner' Rooney had, which somehow pissed off SAF, and therefore, the implication was clear, Rooney sat the Blackburn game. What was interesting to me, and seems to have escaped any other mention is that Rooney's companions at this, um, 'dinner', were Darren Gibson and Jonny Evans - all of whom were reportedly hauled in for extra training before being left out of the Blackburn game. I don't own Rooney but I do own Jonny Evans. Does this mean Evans will be fit for the trip to Newcastle tomorrow ? SAF was interviewed on 'The Football Show' with Charlie Stillitano and Giorgio Chinaglia on Sirius/XM and hemmed and hawed in response to a question about Rooney's absence, and ultimately said something about missing training and needing additional fitness. Hmm. Some 'dinner' it must have been.
3. I still like Gael Clichy, Mancini, not so much. I bigged up Gael Clichy as a 'budget' alternative to Kompany/Richards/Lescott as a way in to the MNC defense. Then Mancini throws a spanner in the works by bringing Kolarov in, apparently just back from injury. I suspect Clichy was being preserved for the much more critical Liverpool game today, but Kolarov's return from injury does threaten occasional Clichy rotation. I also suspect Mancini outsmarted himself a bit by resting Silva and Aguero from the start. Silva especially makes Man City go, and I wonder if Mancini will have taken something from the Sunderland game with respect to Silva's rotation future.
4. Tottenham and Gareth Bale are not invincible. 1 point for Bale this week (and Nani and Silva) demonstrated that a good defensive effort can keep the Welsh wonderboy under wraps. I've got the obligatory 3 Tottenham players for the DGW of course, but I am not sold that Tottenham will finish 3rd. I think Chelsea and Arsenal and possibly Liverpool, will catch them. I plan to keep either Bale or Adebayor or bring in VdV in the January WC, but I doubt I'll keep 2 of the 3. In the 10GWs following this DGW, they go to MNC, LIV, CHE and have MUN at home. A slip up in the game today or Jan 11 game in hand and the rubber will really meet the road through March.
5. Sunderland 1 Man City 0. Another blank for Man City and, again, another mid-table team rode their luck (as WBA did last GW). I didn't see the game but did see the highlights and just in follow up to my last post, I would start to really look hard at Sunderland's players. I think Sessegnon looks a massive bargain. And if Mignolet is truly back from injury represents a big, big bargain at 4.3. Another guy I like on this team who seems to have come back under MON is David Vaughn. Price has dropped to 5.1 this year because Bruce didn't play him, but he's been reinstated as a starter under MON. He was huge for Blackpool last year (110 FF points in 3100+ min) as a sort of deep central mid who occasionally ventures forward. Not the worst budget mid play in a team which looks like it is headed for the top half of the table.
6. Stupid is as stupid does. Here's the entry which may convince you to stop reading this blog but I write this as sort of a learning experience too, so here goes. I was pretty well satisfied with my team coming into this DGW20 with Friedel, Bale and Adebayor in and, well, Royston Drenthe. But Drenthe at least potentially may play 2 games. So, with 0.0 in the bank I was looking to beef up my bench with Evans, Sturridge and Garry Monk (SWN) all looking dodgy in terms of starts for GW20. I could have gone for a simple Caulker (back from a 1 game ban) >> Monk swap, and kept my SWN 2x exposure (I also have Vorm). And that would have been the simple, clean, not-too-clever-but-effective move. Instead, I looked at the schedule and said 'wow, Blackburn get great results at Anfield and Old Trafford and surely will kick on with 2 home games against poor travelers Stoke and Fulham - I'll go for Grant Hanley who played a blinder v. Man Utd'. So, of course, Swansea win their first away game with a CS at Villa, and Crouch destroys a vulnerable Blackburn back 4 with 2 goals. And Hanley picks up a yellow. So, instead of a "5" for Caulker in my back line I have a nice, smooth "0", thanks to Grant Hanley. I guess the lesson here is, if one team has 7 clean sheets already, including 2 away, and another team has zero clean sheets out of 19 games, um, take the cheap defender from the, er, team which has actually kept some clean sheets. Arrrgggghhh !!!!!!!!!!!!

Last minute captain thoughts
I sent the following note to my friendly rival ForzaInter. It's a bit like a 3-wood from 220 yards, pond left front, in a 1 down match on the par 5 18th, but here's the thinking -
I am really torn on the armband. For the reasons I set out on the blog and to you earlier, I think RvP may be as much as 75/25 not to start. I tell you, if I could be assured this Thierry Henry signing was nailed on in time for Fulham, I would have a fair degree of confidence that RvP would start this GW. Wenger has flat out said the Shearer record won't come into play (hint, hint: (in French accent, and more politely) 'he won't start as we have to, have to, have to, get a 4th place CL spot and I am a f***-uvalot more concerned about a trip to Craven Cottage in 2 days than with relegation fodder QPR'), but I wonder if he won't give RvP a first half go at it[the record] against QPR. So, I am gritting my teeth, and hoping; and giving the armband to RvP, at least for the next hour or so while I scour the internet for any further tidbits, speculation or commenter dream interpretations or the reading of entrails. The other reason for gambling on RvP is . . . I have no confidence Nani is assured of a place (or Sturridge at Chelsea for that matter) against a hopeless BLA side. So, I have placed the (vc) on Valencia. Sure, SAF could give a run-out to Rafael, but I think Valencia has (i) better odds of starting/finishing than Nani and (ii) Valencia look Man Utd's form player right now.
A bit of context: I transferred in Valencia/McAuley last night for Moses/Kompany to beat their respective 0.1 price increases last night.

The Takeaway from GW18, Part 2
Gareth Bale saved my GW, no doubt he saved a fair few others as well, and my 48 points kept me just (barely) inside the top 10,000 and well on top in my minileague. But, unfortunately, I crashed out of the FF Cup with 16 points sitting on my bench (Friedel (8) and Simpson (8)). Ouch. But here's a second helping of my takeaways from the GW:
1. West Brom were lucky boys. West Brom kept a CS against the league leaders Man City, who came into the match averaging 3.1 gpg overall and 3.5 gpg away. I had a chance to see the replay of the game, then the highlights. Well, you can take all that happy horseshit about "manly defending" and "well-organized" and put it in your pipe and smoke it; they were lucky. Silva missed 2 chances I would have been upset about missing in an over40 5 v 5; I recall a post coming to Foster's aid, and several gilt-edged chances for Aguero and Balotelli they, well, missed. God bless Martin O'Neil and the job he has done for Sunderland so far, but he would do well to park the bus and hope in this coming GW. Man City aren't going to miss all the chances they create every week
In a previous post, I had bigged up a potential move for Valencia by selling Silva. And I was feeling particularly sorry for myself when I held off on the move and Valencia notched a goal, an assist, a CS point, and 2 BPs. It would have been a fantastic differential move and would have added 10+ for me this week. But I am feeling ok about not making the move after I watched Silva's performance - easily could have had 2 goals (and, then, BPs). In fact, I find it peculiar whenever he doesn't get BPs. So, as disappointed as I was to "lose" the Valencia points, I am going to hold steady with David Silva and look to squeeze Valencia in somewhere else.
Also, has no one else notice you can get nailed on access to one of the best back 4s in FPL for 5.6 ? Hint: Kolarov is injured.
Earlier in the season Edin Dzeko was on my watchlist. I ultimately opted for Adebayor and Dzeko found starts increasingly difficult to come by. Lucky me. But I am wondering if another relatively inexpensive way to get access to the Man City attack is Mario Balotelli. At 8.1 he's in the price range where you need him to start every week and he's not doing that yet, but I wonder if Mancini's man-managment of this guy is beginning to bear fruit. He's scoring goals at 1 per every 89 minutes - van Persie is on a 1 per every 95 minutes clip.
2. Rotation worries. I sent this to my friendly rival ForzaInter recently: As I look at the next GW[19], some difficult decisions are out there. Will Nani and/or RvP be rested ? RvP has a game Dec 31 (QPR) and then Jan 2 (ful). WTF. On the one hand, he is 2 goals shy of the single calendar year record of Alan Shearer, on the other hand, Arsenal need him a whole lot more at Fulham than home v. QPR. One would think. Nani at least has 3 days off after the home game v. BLA on Dec 31- Man Utd play Jan 4 @ NWC. But these are the 2 games I expect Nani and RvP to sit. This has big implications for my captain's selection and was/is one of the reasons I would love to squeeze Valencia in this week - while I think Nani or Valencia might be rested in one of the games in the near term, I don't think SAF would dare rest both Nani AND Valencia in the same game.
I think rotation worries should be a concern with Gareth Bale and Emmanuel Adebayor (and the DGW20) too. Tottenham play at Swansea on Saturday Dec. 31. The Liberty Stadium has been no day in the park for any visitor, so you would expect Bale and Adebayor to play there. But the front end of the DGW comes 3 days later against West Brom on Tuesday Jan 2. Will Redknapp be inclined to at least think about resting his so far everpresents there ? Hmm.
3. Tight, low scoring games. Our future for the next 2 GWs ? 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 0-0, 0-0. The results from 7 of the 10 games; 2 of the others were 2-0 clean sheets, and the last was Man Utd's 5-0 tonking of 10-man Wigan. So, not to shoot the dead horse or anything, but 9 of the 10 games had 2 goals or less, and all games had either 2 goals or less or involved a clean sheet. That was after only 1 short week. The next 2 gameweeks take place over a 6 day timeframe (excepting the Tottenham v. Everton, part of their DGW). I am going to make sure I have defenders that start for their clubs over the next 2 GWs, and I'm not sure it's the worst idea in the world to think about playing a 5-2-3 or 5-3-2, especially in GW20.
4. I think 2 of the 3 promoted teams are likely to go back down. The last few years have seen first Hull City, then Burnley, and then Blackpool hang in there and then fade badly in the second half. West Brom were saved last year through the master raiser of the dead, Roy Hodgson. Ultimately class and experience begin to show.
I don't see Blackburn recovering but I saw the Bolton v. Newcastle game and Bolton were the better side for most of the game. And unlucky to lose. If they can use the money a sale of Cahill might bring (and, for what it's worth I don't think Bolton will miss Cahill) to get a creative midfielder or another goal scorer to go with Klasnic, they might overcome this disasterous first half. They've got a murderous schedule to open the New Year, but a win and a draw in the next 2 (WW, eve) takes them out of the relegation zone.
I've never rated Neil Warnock as a manager at this level and unless QPR spend, well, I don't think Helguson, a guy who couldn't get a look-in until injuries decimated their other options, is the man to lead them to the promised land. And Taraabt might have been the biggest FF bust since, well, since . . . who was that Wigan Italian forward everyone had for the first game or 2 last year ?
I think Swansea may just survive, but I think they will increasingly be found out; teams will give them possession (they can't score anyway, no matter their possession percentage) and beat them on the counter. I will be really intrigued to see Tottenham go there this Saturday. The implication for my team is whether the January window wild card is time to cash in on my Vorm profit.
Norwich have impressed in the way that a really loud, drunk 6'4" guy impresses - crazy, running around, tearing shit up, but sooner or later the police are called and pretty soon the guy looks kind of stupid on the floor in handcuffs. I think if teams sort out how to handle the thugs Holt and Morison (okay, Morison is slightly less a thug, although he really, really looks a thug), they can sort this team going forward. And it is a really, really bad sign that in 18 games you have not kept a single clean sheet. There are some teams that are really hopeless in attack and that you haven't managed to solve them, even once, well good luck with that attack all the time thingy. As a FF group, it's tough to say who is worth owning here. I might go Morison if you are working with a '2 elite/1 budget' forward model, but the midfield is a Lambert rotation nightmare. I might look at Surman, who looks like an actual EPL level winger at 4.4, especially if you need a 4.4 mid that plays to help finance an elite player.
As for Wigan, I love Roberto Martinez and his passion to play good football. I was impressed with Wigan's 2 draws against Chelsea and Liverpool in a run of games I expected them to get pounded every single game. Somehow I think his sanity will return; Connor Sammon will be benched, Rodallega (or at least di Santos) will be restored and score often enough for Wigan to escape. Wigan have a terrific GK, Diame is a formidable holding mid, Moses has a world of potential, but, most importantly, Wigan have been through this relegation stuff before. Moses and Gomez are worth owning as budget mids here, I think.
5. I have a hard time believing it, but Tottenham look for real. Tottenham could have won by 5 or 6 yesterday, and I think the DGW requires any sane FF manager to have 2, better yet 3, Tottenham players in. Gareth Bale will quickly be approaching Silva/RvP numbers in terms of ownership, and I am shocked to see Adebayor has only 18% ownership; he's scored at least a goal or an assist in 12 of his 15 games with Tottenham. For 4.9 you wanted a superstar ?

But sometimes we need to remind ourselves that the game is about fantasy football points. I brought Brad Friedel at 5.5 (4.7%) in 3 GWs ago when Schwarzer was injured as a short term fix through Tottenham's DGW20, fully expecting to WC him out. Now, I'm not so sure. Brad Friedel's last 3 GWs: 10, 4, 8 points. This season, FF point totals comparison.
Friedel(5.5) = 75 points
Walker(5.8) = 64 points
BAE (5.3) = 59 points.
If Tottenham can solidy their centerback situation, why can't Friedel, at much less the cost than Hart, Cech or Reina, be expected to keep similar CS numbers ?
At players priced at 5.5 or under, Friedel is second only to Mikel Vorm in FF points (pauses for a moment for all those who obsessively look for budget defenders, midfielders and forwards with consistent production to look up). Dude, it's about points.
1. West Brom were lucky boys. West Brom kept a CS against the league leaders Man City, who came into the match averaging 3.1 gpg overall and 3.5 gpg away. I had a chance to see the replay of the game, then the highlights. Well, you can take all that happy horseshit about "manly defending" and "well-organized" and put it in your pipe and smoke it; they were lucky. Silva missed 2 chances I would have been upset about missing in an over40 5 v 5; I recall a post coming to Foster's aid, and several gilt-edged chances for Aguero and Balotelli they, well, missed. God bless Martin O'Neil and the job he has done for Sunderland so far, but he would do well to park the bus and hope in this coming GW. Man City aren't going to miss all the chances they create every week
In a previous post, I had bigged up a potential move for Valencia by selling Silva. And I was feeling particularly sorry for myself when I held off on the move and Valencia notched a goal, an assist, a CS point, and 2 BPs. It would have been a fantastic differential move and would have added 10+ for me this week. But I am feeling ok about not making the move after I watched Silva's performance - easily could have had 2 goals (and, then, BPs). In fact, I find it peculiar whenever he doesn't get BPs. So, as disappointed as I was to "lose" the Valencia points, I am going to hold steady with David Silva and look to squeeze Valencia in somewhere else.
Also, has no one else notice you can get nailed on access to one of the best back 4s in FPL for 5.6 ? Hint: Kolarov is injured.
Earlier in the season Edin Dzeko was on my watchlist. I ultimately opted for Adebayor and Dzeko found starts increasingly difficult to come by. Lucky me. But I am wondering if another relatively inexpensive way to get access to the Man City attack is Mario Balotelli. At 8.1 he's in the price range where you need him to start every week and he's not doing that yet, but I wonder if Mancini's man-managment of this guy is beginning to bear fruit. He's scoring goals at 1 per every 89 minutes - van Persie is on a 1 per every 95 minutes clip.
2. Rotation worries. I sent this to my friendly rival ForzaInter recently: As I look at the next GW[19], some difficult decisions are out there. Will Nani and/or RvP be rested ? RvP has a game Dec 31 (QPR) and then Jan 2 (ful). WTF. On the one hand, he is 2 goals shy of the single calendar year record of Alan Shearer, on the other hand, Arsenal need him a whole lot more at Fulham than home v. QPR. One would think. Nani at least has 3 days off after the home game v. BLA on Dec 31- Man Utd play Jan 4 @ NWC. But these are the 2 games I expect Nani and RvP to sit. This has big implications for my captain's selection and was/is one of the reasons I would love to squeeze Valencia in this week - while I think Nani or Valencia might be rested in one of the games in the near term, I don't think SAF would dare rest both Nani AND Valencia in the same game.
I think rotation worries should be a concern with Gareth Bale and Emmanuel Adebayor (and the DGW20) too. Tottenham play at Swansea on Saturday Dec. 31. The Liberty Stadium has been no day in the park for any visitor, so you would expect Bale and Adebayor to play there. But the front end of the DGW comes 3 days later against West Brom on Tuesday Jan 2. Will Redknapp be inclined to at least think about resting his so far everpresents there ? Hmm.
3. Tight, low scoring games. Our future for the next 2 GWs ? 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 0-0, 0-0. The results from 7 of the 10 games; 2 of the others were 2-0 clean sheets, and the last was Man Utd's 5-0 tonking of 10-man Wigan. So, not to shoot the dead horse or anything, but 9 of the 10 games had 2 goals or less, and all games had either 2 goals or less or involved a clean sheet. That was after only 1 short week. The next 2 gameweeks take place over a 6 day timeframe (excepting the Tottenham v. Everton, part of their DGW). I am going to make sure I have defenders that start for their clubs over the next 2 GWs, and I'm not sure it's the worst idea in the world to think about playing a 5-2-3 or 5-3-2, especially in GW20.
4. I think 2 of the 3 promoted teams are likely to go back down. The last few years have seen first Hull City, then Burnley, and then Blackpool hang in there and then fade badly in the second half. West Brom were saved last year through the master raiser of the dead, Roy Hodgson. Ultimately class and experience begin to show.
I don't see Blackburn recovering but I saw the Bolton v. Newcastle game and Bolton were the better side for most of the game. And unlucky to lose. If they can use the money a sale of Cahill might bring (and, for what it's worth I don't think Bolton will miss Cahill) to get a creative midfielder or another goal scorer to go with Klasnic, they might overcome this disasterous first half. They've got a murderous schedule to open the New Year, but a win and a draw in the next 2 (WW, eve) takes them out of the relegation zone.
I've never rated Neil Warnock as a manager at this level and unless QPR spend, well, I don't think Helguson, a guy who couldn't get a look-in until injuries decimated their other options, is the man to lead them to the promised land. And Taraabt might have been the biggest FF bust since, well, since . . . who was that Wigan Italian forward everyone had for the first game or 2 last year ?
I think Swansea may just survive, but I think they will increasingly be found out; teams will give them possession (they can't score anyway, no matter their possession percentage) and beat them on the counter. I will be really intrigued to see Tottenham go there this Saturday. The implication for my team is whether the January window wild card is time to cash in on my Vorm profit.
Norwich have impressed in the way that a really loud, drunk 6'4" guy impresses - crazy, running around, tearing shit up, but sooner or later the police are called and pretty soon the guy looks kind of stupid on the floor in handcuffs. I think if teams sort out how to handle the thugs Holt and Morison (okay, Morison is slightly less a thug, although he really, really looks a thug), they can sort this team going forward. And it is a really, really bad sign that in 18 games you have not kept a single clean sheet. There are some teams that are really hopeless in attack and that you haven't managed to solve them, even once, well good luck with that attack all the time thingy. As a FF group, it's tough to say who is worth owning here. I might go Morison if you are working with a '2 elite/1 budget' forward model, but the midfield is a Lambert rotation nightmare. I might look at Surman, who looks like an actual EPL level winger at 4.4, especially if you need a 4.4 mid that plays to help finance an elite player.
As for Wigan, I love Roberto Martinez and his passion to play good football. I was impressed with Wigan's 2 draws against Chelsea and Liverpool in a run of games I expected them to get pounded every single game. Somehow I think his sanity will return; Connor Sammon will be benched, Rodallega (or at least di Santos) will be restored and score often enough for Wigan to escape. Wigan have a terrific GK, Diame is a formidable holding mid, Moses has a world of potential, but, most importantly, Wigan have been through this relegation stuff before. Moses and Gomez are worth owning as budget mids here, I think.
5. I have a hard time believing it, but Tottenham look for real. Tottenham could have won by 5 or 6 yesterday, and I think the DGW requires any sane FF manager to have 2, better yet 3, Tottenham players in. Gareth Bale will quickly be approaching Silva/RvP numbers in terms of ownership, and I am shocked to see Adebayor has only 18% ownership; he's scored at least a goal or an assist in 12 of his 15 games with Tottenham. The Takeaway from GW18, Part 1
From the heights of a meteoric rise, 6 green arrows on the trot, back to reality with a dire 18 points on the week so far. My FPL Cup match looks nearly lost - and that to an opponent with Begovic in goal, and DeLaet and Ferguson (nwc) on the bench. My FPL Cup opponent had Hernadez captained, so, aside from seeing my J.Evans move fall to ashes, I had to sweat the full 90 minutes as Man United battered 10-man Wigan. Luckily Chicharito was not involved in the points. So, all to play for if I don't want to crash out in the 1st round. It's up to van Persie:
I have Vorm, Bale, Adebayor, and RvP(c) to play v. my opponent +9 and Begovic(Ruddy to come on), VdV, Bale, Adebayor to play. If VdV fails to make the game, he's got McAuley's clean sheet haul v. MNC off the bench. So, Vorm + RvP(c) v. Ruddy + VdV (McAuley) + 9. A massive, uphill battle, unfortunately. A Vorm clean sheet, an RvP goal/assist/BP, Tottenham to batter Ruddy, and a brief, fruitless VdV cameo would just about edge it . . . (shoulders drop in acknowledgment of massive, uphill battle).
A few takeaways on yesterday's games:
1. You put Man United players in your FF side, then pray the teamsheet backs your selections. More than 1 person in my minileague brought in Rooney for the favorable Man United run and then emptied their gun into the TV yesterday when the teamsheet was announced. My J.Evans experiment, which looked ever so clever for a couple of GWs, blew up in my face at halftime yesterday. After talking up a potential Valencia for Silva move in my previous post, I opted not to swap and I felt some vindication in seeing Valencia at left back - until Valencia picked up a goal and an assist from a position that more resembled a right winger after the Sammon send-off (coyote, legs furiously pumping, now noticing there is no ground underneath him). 3 of Man United's next 5 still look pretty good (BLA, new, BOL, ars, STK), so it's still a good idea to stay invested, but it's hard to figure where to invest; or whether to move out Evans. SAF apparently has indicated Evans will be out a couple weeks, but I am not sure I ever believe SAF post game. Only Evra seems nailed on. Smalling may be worth a punt too, as he can used at CB or RB. Ferdinand has suggested he may be back. My best guess at the back 4 over the next few games: Smalling, Ferdinand (if fit), P.Jones, Evra. If Ferdinand can't go, look for maybe Smalling to partner Jones and Valencia at RB.
I may follow through this GW on my Valencia move, just hope it's not chasing last week's points.
2. Berbatov is back in the FF picture. Not. I love watching Dimitar Berbatov play. I think SAF has completely screwed the guy; he's an absolutely brilliant player and the only thing I can think of is that his training ground efforts are not pleasing to the grumpy old bastard. Which is probably down to his languid style. He's Diane Krall, not Janis Joplin. When all is said and done, Berbatov doesn't fit with Rooney and Rooney is Ferguson's boy. So, despite his hat-trick, I think there is a great chance he'll be dropped for Saturday's game v. Blackburn. I think Rooney will return and be partnered with Welbeck or Hernandez. I wouldn't be surprised to see Berbatov get 1 or 2 more starts in the next 5, so if you are feeling lucky for 8.9, he's the ultimate differential at 1.0% owneship. I wish to god he'd put in a January transfer request and go to a team where he would start.
3. Bolton 0 v. Newcastle 2. 2 days ago I ventured the opinion Bolton were staying up after their morale boosting 2-1 win over Blackburn. I also said I was worried about Newcastle's defending since I hold Danny Simpson. Do you have to eat crow head and all ?
Bolton are a disaster well and truly I guess. I can't understand how you can go missing at the Reebok week after week after week. I also don't understand how there can be rumors of a big money Cahill move to a big club. Is no one watching this back 4 ? It's not all Paul Robinson's fault, or Zat Knight's. Newcastle's clean sheet was reassuring for me as a holder of Simpson even though I didn't start him (he is strictly a rotation guy for me).
4. Martin O'Neil, top manager. When Steve Bruce was fired, Sunderland's goal differential was "0", which suggested the team was a bit unlucky with results as opposed to playing horribly. Martin O'Neil has come in and started to get the results the goal differential suggested was appropriate. I watched most of the Sunderland v. Everton game and Sunderland have a few boys worth looking at again, namely Wes Brown (4.5), Seb Larrson (6.9) who is owned by 17.5% of managers, and especially Stephane Sessegnon (6.2) who made the goal yesterday and looks reborn playing in behind Nicklas Bendtner (who, himself, looked terrific). Sessegnon was much hyped preseason, then produced 1 assist in the first 8 GWs (and frankly looked like he couldn't hit the ocean from the dock early on), but he has 75 FF points in just under half a season and he produced 51 FF points in only 1100+ minute last year. Keiren Westwood at 4.3 looks a decent shout in rotation, especially if O'Neil can tidy up his back 4. Sunderland should have had a CS but for a massive referee fail on the PK call. Sunderland's near term schedule is not bad either - MNC, wig, che, SWN, NOR.
5. Stoke City and West Brom keep clean sheets at home. Stoke have been inconsistent but have kept a fair number of clean sheets this year (2 early eye-catchers v. Chelsea and Liverpool) and West Brom now have 3 CS at home and 4 overall. The only reliable defender, in FF terms, at Stoke seems to be Ryan Shawcross at 5.1 (I'm not sold Ryan Shotton (4.0) will hold his RM role). But West Brom have several budget guys you might think about in rotation with say, Aston Villa or Wolves defenders, who rotate well with WBA - Olsson (4.5, bit of a goal threat), Nicky Shorey (4.5, historically has some assist potential), and Gareth McAuley who has started every game since GW6 (4.0).
Off to monitor Arsenal on the BBC text . . .

The Takeaway from GW17 and a tip or two
Merry Christmas to one and all ! Santa was good to Stooshers with 90 points in GW17, and at 1001 points for the year, I've climbed to 8800+ in the world. First in my minileague for the first time in at least 2 years, my best world position ever. How can I f*** this up ? We'll see.
A late post on GW17, including a few head's up on tomorrow.
1. Manchester United have a lot of incredible options and a schedule to boot. Duh. Here we go, 4-1 over Wolves, 5-0 over Fulham and a near term schedule which looks like - WIG, BLA, new, BOL. Booyah ! Aside from the obvious Rooney and Nani selections, there are a ton of options. Best bargain: Jonny Evans. His price has just risen, so he's not completely under the radar, but Antonio Valencia. With A.Young injured (according to SAF, but see No. 2), Valencia seems nailed on for 3 starts of the next 4; he's started 4 games in 18 days - so I expect he'll sit one of the 4 ahead. The only thing holding me back from bringing in Valencia for this minirun is that Valencia doesn't have great FFS/CTI numbers despite a 4 GW run of 3, 12, 8, 6 in his 4 prior starts. I'll be up a couple more hours thinking about this one. A lot of folks will be jumping on Welbeck but I am not confident that he'll start more than 1 or 2 of the next 4. If you look at Hernandez v. Welbeck; Hernandez starts when he is not injured or fatigued. And it looks like Hernandez is back to fitness. Anyone across the back 4 that started the last game (Smalling, P.Jones (see No. 2), Evans, Evra) look like a decent short term punt. And, I'll say this, you could do a lot worse - provided you are willing to pay ~2.0 extra for 2 GK - than the combo of deGea/Lindegaard (10.9). Lindegaard is a bargain price and hasn't conceded in the Premier League. Don't just get De Gea, get Lindegaard too. Carrick and Giggs are decent punts over the short term too. Carrick looks in form to my eye and Giggs, is, well ,Giggs. Won't start all of the next 4 but might be worth a chance on another big week at 6.8 if it fits your budget and you can always WC out after GW21.
2. If you believe anything out of SAF's mouth postgame, I've got a bridge in Arizona I want to sell you. In reading FF blog commenters, I was laughing hysterically at the number of folks bailing on Phil Jones based on a stray elbow and SAF's post game comments. The master of the jedi mind game, I now believe almost just the opposite of everything SAF says relative to the fitness of his players post game. I mean, if you think about it, Jones took a shot to the jaw. It's hard to break a jaw. But I was happy to see tons of FF managers go into sell-off mode (and buy Evans, who I bought at 4.4). Don't know if Jones will start tomorrow, but I would not be surprised.
3. Are there Everton players worth owning ? Short answer: I wouldn't go out of my way. I gambled on Royston Drenthe last week and he was worth 6 points and looked like he might grab BP points. I am going to stay through the DGW20 but he has a lot to prove in terms of a long term contract with my side. Osman had great FFS/CTI numbers and is only 6.7. There isn't a lot of great value in this range, although I would argue that Walters is probably a better value, given Stoke's near term schedule. Everton play 4 of their next 5 away, although they do have the DGW20. I bigged up Baines a few weeks ago, and if I had him, I'd probably hang with him through the DGW20. Jagielka has ~13% ownership, which seems insane to me, but . . . I wouldn't drop him until after DGW20. The budget defender here is Hibbert at 4.8. But, again, 4 of the next 5 Everton games are away.
4. Newcastle 2 v. WBA 3. I initially had Evans benched (away to Ful) and had Simpson in, in a game that, earlier in the year, I would have expected Newcastle to be good odds for a clean sheet. Sanity returned, Evans came in for Simpson just before deadline, and, well, I picked up 6 points. As a Simpson holder, I'm a little worried about Newcastle's defense.
This week reminded us all of the force that Peter Odemwingie can be when fit. WBA play 3 of the next 4 at home - MNC, EVE, tot, NOR - and I rode Odemwingie hard last year, so I tend to think he's a good value ahead. If you have Ba, you might want to monitor Odemwingie for a sideways pricewise transfer.
5. I think Wigan and Bolton will survive. What does that mean for the FF manager ? Not a lot. Al-Haibsi, Moses and Gomez for Wigan. All good rotation guys. Bolton, not so much. I think Klasnic is a good budget forward, but since Eagles has been benched, it's hard to see any value here. G.Cahill is rumored to be off to greener pastures (big teams, apparently, haven't been watching Cahill's performances this year) and he may become a FF value at 5.2, but this is a guy who has 17 FF points in his last 16 games. He makes Jonathan Woodgate look positively prolific. Maybe at Chelsea or Tottenham and at 5.2 he becomes worth a look in. A late post on GW17, including a few head's up on tomorrow.
1. Manchester United have a lot of incredible options and a schedule to boot. Duh. Here we go, 4-1 over Wolves, 5-0 over Fulham and a near term schedule which looks like - WIG, BLA, new, BOL. Booyah ! Aside from the obvious Rooney and Nani selections, there are a ton of options. Best bargain: Jonny Evans. His price has just risen, so he's not completely under the radar, but Antonio Valencia. With A.Young injured (according to SAF, but see No. 2), Valencia seems nailed on for 3 starts of the next 4; he's started 4 games in 18 days - so I expect he'll sit one of the 4 ahead. The only thing holding me back from bringing in Valencia for this minirun is that Valencia doesn't have great FFS/CTI numbers despite a 4 GW run of 3, 12, 8, 6 in his 4 prior starts. I'll be up a couple more hours thinking about this one. A lot of folks will be jumping on Welbeck but I am not confident that he'll start more than 1 or 2 of the next 4. If you look at Hernandez v. Welbeck; Hernandez starts when he is not injured or fatigued. And it looks like Hernandez is back to fitness. Anyone across the back 4 that started the last game (Smalling, P.Jones (see No. 2), Evans, Evra) look like a decent short term punt. And, I'll say this, you could do a lot worse - provided you are willing to pay ~2.0 extra for 2 GK - than the combo of deGea/Lindegaard (10.9). Lindegaard is a bargain price and hasn't conceded in the Premier League. Don't just get De Gea, get Lindegaard too. Carrick and Giggs are decent punts over the short term too. Carrick looks in form to my eye and Giggs, is, well ,Giggs. Won't start all of the next 4 but might be worth a chance on another big week at 6.8 if it fits your budget and you can always WC out after GW21.
2. If you believe anything out of SAF's mouth postgame, I've got a bridge in Arizona I want to sell you. In reading FF blog commenters, I was laughing hysterically at the number of folks bailing on Phil Jones based on a stray elbow and SAF's post game comments. The master of the jedi mind game, I now believe almost just the opposite of everything SAF says relative to the fitness of his players post game. I mean, if you think about it, Jones took a shot to the jaw. It's hard to break a jaw. But I was happy to see tons of FF managers go into sell-off mode (and buy Evans, who I bought at 4.4). Don't know if Jones will start tomorrow, but I would not be surprised.
3. Are there Everton players worth owning ? Short answer: I wouldn't go out of my way. I gambled on Royston Drenthe last week and he was worth 6 points and looked like he might grab BP points. I am going to stay through the DGW20 but he has a lot to prove in terms of a long term contract with my side. Osman had great FFS/CTI numbers and is only 6.7. There isn't a lot of great value in this range, although I would argue that Walters is probably a better value, given Stoke's near term schedule. Everton play 4 of their next 5 away, although they do have the DGW20. I bigged up Baines a few weeks ago, and if I had him, I'd probably hang with him through the DGW20. Jagielka has ~13% ownership, which seems insane to me, but . . . I wouldn't drop him until after DGW20. The budget defender here is Hibbert at 4.8. But, again, 4 of the next 5 Everton games are away.
4. Newcastle 2 v. WBA 3. I initially had Evans benched (away to Ful) and had Simpson in, in a game that, earlier in the year, I would have expected Newcastle to be good odds for a clean sheet. Sanity returned, Evans came in for Simpson just before deadline, and, well, I picked up 6 points. As a Simpson holder, I'm a little worried about Newcastle's defense.
This week reminded us all of the force that Peter Odemwingie can be when fit. WBA play 3 of the next 4 at home - MNC, EVE, tot, NOR - and I rode Odemwingie hard last year, so I tend to think he's a good value ahead. If you have Ba, you might want to monitor Odemwingie for a sideways pricewise transfer.
5. I think Wigan and Bolton will survive. What does that mean for the FF manager ? Not a lot. Al-Haibsi, Moses and Gomez for Wigan. All good rotation guys. Bolton, not so much. I think Klasnic is a good budget forward, but since Eagles has been benched, it's hard to see any value here. G.Cahill is rumored to be off to greener pastures (big teams, apparently, haven't been watching Cahill's performances this year) and he may become a FF value at 5.2, but this is a guy who has 17 FF points in his last 16 games. He makes Jonathan Woodgate look positively prolific. Maybe at Chelsea or Tottenham and at 5.2 he becomes worth a look in. Another bit of info, and who knows since it came out of SAF's mouth, is that A.Young sustained some sort of knee injury and is expected out for 2-3 weeks. Subject to rotation, Nani and Valencia should be close to nailed on for 2-3 weeks with each maybe getting a GW off - but probably not together. More importantly, Nani and Valencia were central to every attacking MUN move. If there are goals, Nani and Valencia will be involved.
Another important point is that Aguero reminds us of the force he is [in the Stoke game]. The thing about Aguero is that he is currently only 0.6 more expensive than Silva, but has more points (108 v103); has more double figure GWs (5 v 4) and, more importantly for armband purposes has 66 points in those 5 double figure GWs (pending BPs this week) v. Silva's 43 in his 4 double figure GWs. This tells me there is so much more upside to Aguero - who will almost always get the armband in favorable fixtures (whereas I have been reluctant to go to Silva(c) despite his consistency).
MUN schedule for the next 4(6) GWs: WIG, BLA, new, BOL, (ars, STK).
MNC schedule for the next 4(6) GWs: wba, sun, LIV, wig, (TOT, eve). And, as we know, 2 Carling Cup games in that mix, as well as a FA Cup game.
Call me crazy, but this all screams Valencia >> Silva for the next 4 GWs (2-3 weeks); after GW20, Tottenham's DGW, Aguero >> Adebayor. And then re-evaluate with the transfer window WC, with a view to replacing Silva permanently with the steady Yaya Toure after his return from ACN (perhaps once A.Young is back to fitness and threatens Valencia's place again).
Late in the evening here in E.S.T., but I am torn on this one. Dropping Silva leaves me with no attacking MNC coverage. Valencia has scored well in terms of FF points but not in terms of the EA Sports PPI or FFS/CTI. But I give up Silva, central to MNC averaging 3.0+ gpg. The upside is the 2.1 I would grab off Silva makes a Vermaelen or a Clichy or a Skrtel or a P.Jones or a A.Cole available for Monk.
7. Does the 24 hour push back of the Arsenal game change your RvP play ? I thought there was a good chance that van Persie might be rested for the Wolves game but with the game pushed back 24 hours, I think RvP is a good bet to start. So he's my no-brainer captain selection. I am guessing he'll be rested v. QPR 4 days later with Fulham away 3 days after that.

The Takeaway from GW16
No sooner is GW16 in the books than we need to think about GW17 and beyond as the fixtures come fast and furious over the next 2 weeks.
1. Christmas came early in my FF world. When I went to bed last night, I was hoping for a nice, average score, somewhere in the mid/high50s, given my misfiring captain, Emmanuel Adebayor. I was hoping to keep pace with others in my minileague and stay in the 30K range world ranking. Lo and behold, Santa left me a great big, brightly wrapped, blinking green arrow ! Adebayor and my team's latest new boy, Brad Friedel jump on 3 BPs; to go with 3 for Sturridge and Silva, and suddenly a 67 point GW was under the tree ! Saw me move to within 3 points of my minileague leader and just over 22K in the world.
But this GW was a reminder of how consistently solid David Silva is, both in the real world and in terms of his FF delivery. A goal, his first home goal in a while, and the full 3 BPs (despite Samir Nasri being named the MOM at the game) saw an 11 pointer for the Spaniard his 4th double figure haul this year.
2. Royston Drenthe can play. In a 20 minute cameo, he looked easily the best player Everton has in attack. Although his assist was a bit fortuitous, coming off a scuffed shot, he could easily have had 2 goals but for good saves by Ruddy. He was full of movement and pace and looked to take on defenders at every opportunity. I saw him earlier in the year and thought 'meh' - but at 5.9 with a good near term schedule, including DGW20 (SWN, sun, wba, BOL/tot, avl, BLA), he looks a very decent option for a 3 week flyer if he is well and truly over his injury. Everton's inability to keep CSs really hurts Baines' appeal at 7.8 and Jagielka at 5.4, and with a poor attack, most will be avoiding Everton despite the upcoming DGW. Drenthe's 20 minute cameo has me reconsidering.
3. Fingers crossed, Evans looks a steal. No one knows what's in SAF's mind from week to week in terms of Man Utd's line-up, but for 2 straight GWs the back 4 was Smalling, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra. With Fletcher and Cleverly out so that Jones looks a midfield fixture, this might be SAF's default back 4. I suspect SAF would like to settle on a fixed back 4 (as any manager would, I certainly do as a coach). If that's the case, Evans is looking like the second coming of Enrique.
4. By the way, Liverpool defense. Skrtel's goal will shed a little light on a pretty well-kept secret, the meanest defense in the EPL. Liverpool have conceded only 13 goals this year, 1 less than Man Utd and 2 less than Man City. 35% of managers have Enrique but Skrtel and Agger are 6.0/5.9 and Dalglish has opted for these 2 over Carragher (as a Liverpool fan, something I think that's been long, long overdue) and with a very, very good near term schedule (aside from a trip to MNC), is doubling down on Liverpool's defense the worst idea ?
5. What to do with Suarez ? Despite his uncanny ability to miss chances, 27.5% of managers have kept faith. His EA PPI and FFS/ICT numbers look good (nobody creates/takes more shots), and when you watch him you see an all-action figure who creates 3-4 quality chances a week for himself but . . . he doesn't have a single double figure GW all season. Now the Evra and Fulham finger incidents may result in an enforced layoff but if you have him, even aside from a suspension threat, you have to look at the likes of Ba, Sturridge, Adebayor, or even Yakubu, Morison, Holt or Klasnic, and say I can put the extra cash to some use.
6. Eyewitness says Bolton are Dead Men Walking. My good friend Bretto, manager of ForzaInter, is in London for a Christmas holiday (jealous nashing of teeth) and he was at Craven Cottage for the 2-0 Fulham win over Bolton. He reports that Ruiz, Dembele and, especially Dempsey, were very impressive. Ive been bigging Clint Dempsey all year and yesterday was his 3rd double figure points haul this season. He sits tied for 4th in midfield FF points. Tough near term schedule, but when the schedule clears he's a guy who should be on your Watch List.
Bretto gives a picture of Bolton as listless no-hopers, however. As a Bolton fan, that's depressing, but as a FF manager I guess the takeaway is, I might want to think about the players in my squad as starters/captain material if Bolton are in the headlights. I really, really like Owen Coyle as a manager and hope they can win at Blackburn this week which might get Coyle's head off the chopping block. It's probably down to whether bargain price forward Ivan Klasnic can continue his form which sees him in the top 10 of forwards for FF points so far this year, despite serving a 3 game ban.

Man City were deserved 1-0 winners yesterday, I thought, but Arsenal were within a whisker of tieing it late through a couple of Vermaelen strikes. Joe Hart had to be sharp on 1 and another was about 6" to the left of the post from being an equalizer. He's got 3 goals already, and on yesterday's evidence, you wouldn't bet against him doubling that this year. At 6.9, and Arsenal's good defensive record since he came back from injury, he might be a good transition from Baines or Vidic (if you had the Serb). With few midfielders in the ~7.0 price range Vermaelen is that 'triple threat' (attacking/CS/BP) defender it's worth looking at if you are willing to add a defender at the cost of a midfielder in your formation.
