Differentials are getting hard to come by

With Ba and Cisse returning early, and with Balotelli's suspension pushing Dzeko into some manager's thoughts (only me and a few others apparently, there appears to be a Ba feeding frenzy), I've been thinking about team make-up and the differentials that will (i) help me grow my minileague lead (rust never sleeps) or (ii) might help others improve their minileague position.

I guess the key point is the lack of differentials we're seeing in most teams (I am excluding the 'ghost ship' teams here).  I am seeing a lot of RMT teams with, essentially, 5 mids and 3 forwards a manager will want in his team most weeks.

So you'll see something like -
Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Valencia/Sessegnon - RvP/Aguero/Sturridge with a plan to bring in Ba for Sturridge)

Of course, you can only start 7.  And this issue is typically dismissed with the rationale 'it's a good problem to have'.  This may be contrarian but, well, no, it's not.  It's a waste of assets.  If we assume you've paid at least 6.5 for the least of your front 8 (as in the example here), you are wasting at least 1.0/1.5 every week - and more if you sit anyone costing more that, if we presume one's bench should be filled with 4.0-5.5(at most) guys.

I currently have Moses (Bale/Valencia/Sessegnon/Dempsey) in my midfield but have been thinking about bringing Silva or another elite or tier 2 midfielder in.  But that sets up a 5-man midfield with players I don't want to sub out and a front 3 I won't be inclined to sit either (RvP/Aguero/Sturridge(or Ba, if I jump on that bandwagon)).  Now Sessegnon/Ba set up a perfect NWC/SUN rotation pairing.  But.  Of Sessegnon's 5G/8A, 3G/3A have come away; Ba has actually scored more goals away from St. James Park than in its friendly confines.  And you are wasting significant funds having these 6.5+ or the 7.3+ assets on your bench.  In my case, I can put a number on it, since I have the 4.8 Moses in my team as perfect bench fodder (90 min every week, occasional 3+ games) - I waste 1.7+ sitting Sessegnon or would waste 2.4+ if I acquired and sat Ba. That's the difference between sitting bench fodder and having the supposed 'good' problem. So.

This leads me to a couple of conclusions.  You either need a bench fodder player in your front 8; someone whose role is to serve as an able replacement in the event one of your front 7 sits; or you need 2 high end budget guys to rotate in your front 8.  A second conclusion about differentials follows from a rough eyeballing of most RMTs - most teams (active, as opposed to the 'ghost ship' teams still floating around out there - about half of my minileague, for instance) are settling on a selection of 7/8 from among about 14 front players-

Silva/Bale/Valencia/Dempsey/Sessegnon/Walters/Dyer/Nani(inj?)
RvP/Rooney/Aguero/Adebayor/Sturridge/Ba/Dzeko

Only Dyer looks like he is still subject to selection as a budget alternative, otherwise teams are loading up on  this group of elite guys or mid-price guys who have so far proved to have significant value.  The good news is selecting 7 from this group does afford many managers excess funds.  What to do then ?

My conclusion here is perhaps controversial but it is this - with the 'staleness' (or lack of differentials) of attacking selection options, differentials will come from (1) the steady accretion of points in defense or (2) opting for a sound rotation strategy with 2 or even 4 'under-the-radar' types in your attacking positions.  With respect to (2) here, there aren't a ton of options that I see at the right price (Ramires/Zamora is one at the high-end of what you might want to pay for rotation guys) or who are guaranteed starts (Sessegnon/Ben Arfa in this category, in that Ben Arfa's place is not nailed down).  But if you examine the schedule and the 'value' filter in FPL or review the numbers in the FFS Members section, you may be able to find a really solid pairing or 2.

So the first option seems perhaps the best path forward - spend the extra cash afforded by some of the mid-priced options among the 14 or so 'standard' attacking picks and add an extra elite team* defender even 2; and gamble on one of these selections being a defender with some offensive upside (Vermaelen, G.Johnson, A.Cole, Richards, Ivanovic).  I might also even recommend thinking about a Hart or Reina or a Lindegaard/deGea combo in goal and doubling down as your pick's schedule presents CS opportunities.  This is contrary to most standard FF manager advice and certainly won't see your team rocket up the table.  But a steady accumulation of CS for 2-3 defenders can turn a lot of 30-40 point weeks into 50+.  Simply put, if you are paying attention, your attacking differentials are limited to timely hitting the armband selection a few weeks in a row, since most teams have the same attacking players.  Are 4 elite team defenders too many ?  I think it might be a big differential.

*For argument sake, I am going to put MNC, MUN, CHE, ARS and LIV in this 'elite' defense category, although an argument can be made that TOT have kept more CS and deserve the designation more than CHE.  And the argument can be made against ARS inclusion, although my view is they are a different team w/Vermaelen at center back.  I guess I would make the further qualification that you should always look at the near-term (6 games out or so) schedule too, because aside from the 2 Manchesters, all of the teams in this group have had ups and downs.

  1. Excellent, excellent reasoning for going with elite defenders.

    You've got me thinking.

The only thing I can find to argue your point is the emergence of all the cheap clean sheet options, such as Swansea defenders.

It's strange to see how all the active teams look similar after the wildcard. This could be due to the popularity of sites such as FFS or just a shortage of viable options.

  2. You make some very valid points. Like you, I am of the belief that my MF should consist of one (1) bench fodder player. Currently I like Sigurdsson or McClean. Both are cheap enough to sit every game if need be, but when you tap them on the shoulder, they can step onto the pitch and perform.

Like you, I took the extra funds I saved on my 5th MF (McClean instead of Valencia) = ~3.6£ and invested it in an elite DF and elite GK. Now I have 2 elite DF's and 3 cheap, rotating CS specialists (like Gummi suggested) to go along with a Home/Away GK combo.

Up front, it is crazy! Outside of RVP, everyone else is in a bit of a funk.

City are in desperate need of Yaya's return, as they are having a tough time of penetrating the "eight men in the box" defenses they are currently seeing. They need Yaya back to allow Silva, Nasri and the like to find the seams and provide service to the ST's. I'll take Aguero here, as the Dzeko/Balotelli slow dance has worn thin this manager's last nerve! But beware, Aguero prefers eating at home versus going out!

Injuries plague United. Valenica appears to be the only player capable of providing consistent returns. If SAF would play Berb's there might be a little more meat to nibble on when it comes to United. As it is, I have avoided SAF's squad altogether.

Spurs? Uh, anyone seen Ade lately? Check your milk cartons to see if his picture appears on the side with the word "Missing" printed above.

That brings me to NUFC. Ba is a no brainer and before you say, "Hey he didn't look too good at ACoN," let's not forget that he only practiced with the side for 7-10 days max. Once he gets his feet back on english soil, look for him to menace the EPL once again. And as I see it, Cisse won't be a hinderance but a much needed Robin to Ba's Batman. This dynamic duo has the makings of running rough shod over the rest of the season, provided they can get consistent service from the Alfred's on the team. I'm taking a punt on Cisse from the get go as I see this as the possible differential I will need to win my mini-league.

Great Blog by the way. Enjoy reading your posts. Keep up the good work.

  3. Thanks Gummi and Genevapics. My theory on elite team DF came a cropper last night as I brought in Kompany and doubled-down on MNC @ Goodison; undone by a Gibson wonderstrike. I believe that is the first recorded shot by Darren Gibson that has not flown 20 yards over the bar. Might be wrong. Anyway, my thinking on going with elite team defenders (as opposed to the budget alternatives) at this point is (1) if we assume most active team managers are selecting from essentially 15 or so attacking players and some of those are midpriced, see, e.g., Valencia, Ba, Dzeko, you can afford to go a little bigger on defenders who might be differentials. (2) I think we will begin to see greater consistency among the top 5-6 teams as we get into the classically phrased 'squeeky bum time' of the season. Especially with the 2 Manchesters; I expect both Mancini and SAF to ratchet back the attacking instincts to nail down clean sheets. And once Liverpool get through their 'blank' GW26, I think they will merit DF investment (although I'm keeping Enrique, who I had on the bench last night, doh!). (3) I think some of the teams keeping CS in the first half are beginning to be found out or just struggle for consistency. SWN have kept 1 CS since GW16 and while NWC have kept 4 CS in their last 8, they've conceded 15 goals in those 8 games. I think there is an element of 'returning to the mean' with midtable teams in terms of CS whereas I think the top 5-6 will continue their CS pace (MNC, MUN, LIV) or 'return to the mean' in the other direction (CHE,ARS).

Anyway, that's my theory. Didn't work for me in the case of Kompany and I didn't stick to my guns with Enrique.

Genevapics - I hear you on Ba (and I like Cisse too, his success in Germany suggests he may move over to the EPL seamlessly). I can't get Sturridge out fast enough after that turgid performance last night. Chelsea have lost the plot and until AVB can get the players in to make his style of play work, they are operating on fumes.

I also don't understand the 2 year Berbatov freeze-out. For my money one of the most brilliant players in the EPL who should start every game unless there is a bone showing. Very, very strange.

I disagree on Valencia. Pure, out-and-out winger which suits SAF's style of play. I think he's for real. 2 years ago on 144 points and last year after his horror injury he gets 42 points in 700+ minutes in the final third of the season. Now, project that out to 2800 minutes. Remember, he took minutes off Nani in the final third of the season last year.

I also like your thoughts on Yaya. Right now, I am maxed on MNC (Clichy, Kompany, Aguero) but when Yaya comes back I will be switching out Aguero and bringing in Yaya. Great FF value and perhaps the MVP in the EPL this year.

  4. Valencia is no doubt the real deal, I just can't afford him due to budget constraints. If I could, he would elevate my Fantastic Four to the Fab 5. Budget constraints and the question as to what happens to his playing time once Nani and Young come back. Already in today's papers there are whispers from SAF that Rooney, Nani and Young might be available for this weekend. We'll see. As the saying goes, "You can't have everything."
